Stormy Glenn's paranormal books are a secret pleasure that I slip in periodically to my reading/buying habits. When I want a really enjoyable shifter or vampire novel, she's the author I turn to. In Pocket-Sized Prince, Ms. Glenn once again weaves a charming and quirky tale of werewolf mates and their struggle to be together.

Zack Evens is a low-ranking enforcer in his pack. His family was banished and he was forced to stay on when his old Alpha was deposed and he's been alone ever since. The current Alpha and his inner circle have been abusing pack members ever since until Zack's Alpha challenges the wrong wolf -- and loses -- causing a leadership change. (Fort hose with triggers, there is mention of past abuse, but it is not on-screen or graphic).

The new Alpha, Iben Khenti is 5'7 and maybe 150 pounds soaking wet. What he lacks in stature, he makes up for in attitude. Zack cannot fathom how Iben ever won the challenge with his former Alpha. Once Zack and Iben meet, Iben is immediately attracted to the other wolf, but Zack is too confused about his past to reciprocate. (This is what starts the Big Misunderstanding in the book.) However, when it looks like Iben might go feral if Zack doesn't agree to be his mate, will Zack's fears cause him to lose the only man he's ever cared about?

What I Liked

The characterization of Iben. Far from a fragile flower that needs protecting from his bigger mate, this man is fierce and his werewolf is powerful and scary. Score one for the little guy! A delightful change to the normally big burly Alphas that usually appear in this genre. I love a man who wears eyeliner and can kick ass!

OK, in my shifter books (of which I am a fanatic, especially of werewolves), the alpha is always rough and tough and usually gets his (usually) way most of the time. The mate is almost always meek and submissive (in attitude and in bed). Not so here. Iben the alpha is tough as all hell, but as a man, he just want to basically be cuddled (and in shifter books wolves can be very cuddly). Zack the omega and his mate is fierce and will protect what he believes in with his life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The writing was taut and engaging. The characters were very likeable (except for the horrible ones who were despicable), and the storyline was fun.

***Spoiler***

Our alpha is over 200 years old but a virgin, because he's holding out for the right wolf. That's also different.
People also speak of the "Big Misunderstanding". There is no big misunderstanding. Zack is simply not going to hop into Iben's bed just because the big bad alpha told him to. He's got some pride. That speaks to self-esteem.

I wish this little book weren't so little, because it was a neat story. Please note that now werewolves were harmed in the writing of this book, except the ones that were, and they pretty much had it coming (just for building that awful house in the woods alone).

I have a weakness for Stormy Glenn stories, and this one fills the bill very nicely. It's a new variation on the classic shifter romances she's written about before, with just enough differences to breath some new life into the genre.

Iben is the new Alpha of a pack. He gained the title when the previous Alpha was foolish enough to challenge him thinking that since he's so short, he must be weak. As the Alpha quickly found out, Iben is an incredibly powerful shifter. The end result is that the old Alpha is no more, Iben is the new Alpha, and he must take control of the former Alpha's pack. Iben soon finds out that since the old Alpha was controlling, egotistical, sadistic, and ruthless, the pack was structured with people in command who are just as ruthless and sadistic, something that Iben will not tolerate.

Zack was a low-level enforcer in the pack. Abused, beaten, and whipped for so long, he tends to believe that all Alphas are alike, using their power to get what they want and to trample over everyone else. Even though he feels an attraction to Iben, he can't help but think Iben is no different from everyone else and use his authority to take advantage of Zack. As an example, when Iben comes onto Zack, Zack wants to know if Iben is ordering him to be responsive.

This creates an interesting interplay between the two characters. Deep down inside, Zack wants Iben but doesn't like feeling like he's forced to reciprocate Iben's advances. Iben wants Zack, but his strong apha nature causes him to pursue Zack aggressively, forgetting that from Zack's point of view, it would look like he's taking advantage of Zack. This creates an interesting conflict between the characters, and as anyone who reads romance knows, conflict is necessary for a good story.

Only thing I would change is the whole no true mates I didn't like that about the book because shifter romance the main trademark is true mates if I didn't want to read about true mates I would read a regular romance which I don't like. The book was well written and surprisingly worked even though the Alpha was not the usual Alpha type I'm surprised I enjoyed it.
