A few highlights that I didn't know:
1. Launch with 3-5 podcasts
2. Have your next two to three months of shows done before launch (gives a buffer)
3. You have 8 weeks to hit the new and noteworthy list.
Items Missing from this book:
1. How to choose the right category to maximize exposure
2. How to name your podcast (Do you use your brand or use SEO optimized keywords)
All in all, well worth the read.
A few additional tips I have learned:
1. Launch 5 episodes to start (when someone subscribes, that is 5 downloads. That means 10 people = 50 downloads). Itunes uses downloads as a key indicator of success.
2. For the first 7 days, launch a podcast a day (after your first 5 on the first day). This helps people trust that you are going to be there for them. After the first week, you can ramp down to your normal schedule (i.e. once or twice a week).
3. Do not buy ratings on itunes (itunes gives higher rank to more active users. Fake accounts may hurt you. I didn't do this, but know folks who did)
4. Choose a category that has lower competition and use SEO fiendly keywords. This will help people find you in organic search.
5. Do a video podcast and also strip the audio out and do a separate audio podcast. This gives you twice the exposure!
-MEGATIP: Be sure to post the audio version in a separate category (that way you can rank in two charts and get more listeners).
6. Keep your podcast focused and consistent, but feel free to vary the format. You could do interviews every other week and just you talking on the off weeks.
7. Be sure you have some major differentiator. What makes your podcast different than the others in your category?

That said, however, I thank Mr. Dumas for his helpful, this-is-how-we-do-it-son guide. I am most grateful for the section on Sponsorships. I have yet to go through the videos, but I've taken detailed notes on the book itself, including the noting of to-dos for myself. I'm definitely taking this advice seriously!
I have an already-established Podcast, so I could have used some advice about how to get into the New and Noteworthy section on iTunes anyway -- a re-launch? A sister Podcast, perhaps an "advice" call-in show? How would he set up that functionality? Or would he recommend going with one of the Podcast networks now springing up with package deals to use their live "airwaves" and studio time, rather than setting up this technology he spends so much time talking about before he gets down to the business plan? (As a professional editor, I would have put the tech stuff last and the business stuff first, just noting up front that there are economical ways to set up a home studio and he'll go into detail on that later.) How have some others in my situation gotten into New and Noteworthy? I also suspect there's a lot more to iTunes promotion than just New and Noteworthy. While we're at it, let's hear more on the BlackBerry and Stitcher uploads, which I had no idea even existed.
I have a feeling this information changes pretty fast, so an update of this e-book would be welcome.
I'm considering joining the Podcasters' Paradise, but an up-front free sample month would be easier to jump into than a commitment to more than a thousand dollars for a "lifetime membership." Perhaps, once my Podcast took off, and I started getting sponsorships, I would consider that membership.
Nonetheless, the advice to hit up guests for cross-promotion alone is priceless.
When I found out this highly successful podcast didn't even exist this time last year, and that John had no previous experience in this realm, I realized all my excuses for not starting were gone. When I learned of this resource while visiting his website, I knew I needed to dive in.
I found John's style made for an easy read. I enjoyed following along while listening to the free audio version he recorded. The video tutorials are also quite useful. While I've appreciated similar resources offered by Cliff Ravenscraft and Pat Flynn, John's e-book was the one thing that enabled me to get my head wrapped around it all.
If you want an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide that can help walk you through everything you need to know to start a podcast, then this is the book for you. I for one don't think you'll be disappointed.
