Dentro del drama en gente pessoano la máscara concedida a Álvaro de Campos es la que más parecido tiene con su creador, hasta el punto de que hay momentos en los que es casi imposible distinguir entre Campos y Pessoa. Durante los 20 años que van de su creación en 1915 a la muerte de ambos como co-hermanos en 1935, las vidas y las poesías del poeta y de su heterónimo se mezclan e imbrican de forma complementaria y casi indisoluble. Pessoa llegó a definir a Campos como "el más histéricamente histérico de mí" o como "mi compañero de psiquismo", de manera que la recopilación de la Poesía completa de Álvaro de Campos recoge uno de los núcleos fundamentales ―aunque todos lo sean― de la obra de su creador. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

Considera-se que a grande criação estética de Pessoa foi a invenção heteronímia que atravessa toda a sua obra. Os heterônimos, diferentemente dos pseudônimos, são personalidades poéticas completas: identidades que, em princípio falsas, se tornam verdadeiras através da sua manifestação artística própria e diversa do autor original. Entre os heterônimos, o próprio Fernando Pessoa passou a ser chamado ortônimo, porquanto era a personalidade original. Entretanto, com o amadurecimento de cada uma das outras personalidades, o próprio ortônimo tornou-se apenas mais um heterônimo entre os outros. Os três heterônimos mais conhecidos (e também aqueles com maior obra poética) foram Álvaro de Campos, Ricardo Reis e Alberto Caeiro. Um quarto heterônimo de grande importância na obra de Pessoa é Bernardo Soares, autor do Livro do Desassossego, importante obra literária do século XX. Bernardo é considerado um semi-heterônimo por ter muitas semelhanças com Fernando Pessoa e não possuir uma personalidade muito característica, ao contrário dos três primeiros, que possuem até mesmo data de nascimento e morte (exceção para Ricardo Reis, que não possui data de falecimento). Por essa razão, José Saramago, laureado com o Prêmio Nobel, escreveu o livro O ano da morte de Ricardo Reis. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.
