"Huidobro rejoices in the power of poetry to fashion a new world, to envision a place stripped to its raw state, and to reinvent our staid surroundings into one that reverberates with profound impact upon our souls. Undaunted by the technology blamed for the extent of the [First World] War's damage, he embraces planes, trains, cameras, bombs and zeppelins as essential to growth, pairing them with rivers, trees, leaves and waves... a sense of the time period is captured and a fresh voice from the modern period emerges once more." -- CHELSEA No. 62, 1997
About the Author
Vicente Huidobro (1893-1948) was a high-spirited Chilean poet, playwright and novelist who hobnobbed with the Paris avant-garde in the early twentieth century. As the founder of Creacionismo ("Creationism"), he refused to observe the laws of physics and strove to compete with nature in creative imagery. His portrait was drawn by Picasso, and two of his poems were set to music by Edgar Varese.
