Review
". . . the translation may indeed be regarded as the crowning achievement of a great scholar." ― Scandinavian-American Bulletin
From the Back Cover
The Poetic Edda comprises a treasure trove of mythic and spiritual verse holding an important place in Nordic culture, literature, and heritage. Its tales of strife and death form a repository, in poetic form, of Norse mythology and heroic lore, embodying both the ethical views and the cultural life of the North during the late heathen and early Christian times.
About the Author
Lee M. Hollander was Professor Emeritus of Germanic Languages at the University of Texas at Austin and an authority in Nordic language and literature. His translations of the best prose and poetry of the Old North-― among them Heimskringla: History of the

The Hollander translation isn't my favorite, but I was buying this to do a side-by side comparison with multiple translations, so in that respect, it was exactly what I expected it to be. (I'm comparing Hollander, Bellows, Crawford, Kvilhaug, Dodds, Dronke, and Larrington; my personal favorite is Crawford, although I appreciate Kvilhaug's footnotes and insights tremendously, even if she may be, perhaps, a bit "left of center" for some academics out there).

I can't comment on the content, since I haven't read through the book yet. So I found it only reasonable to subtract a star. I have been meaning to get a copy of the Poetic Edda for some time though and I've had my eye on this version. As far as how it arrived, it came undamaged which I was really happy about. If you've looked into the book a bit and it piques your interest, I would say it's worth it.

It a good book to learn of the EDDA Poetic, the Author tries to teach the different ideals to the writing of the Runes and where they may have can from. I would recommend the to any one trying to learn or understand the old form of communication.

If you have an interest in Norse mythology, and don't mind a tough read, this book is great. I am not a lit or mythology major but I have really enjoyed reading through this. It's easier if you read through the Prose Edda first to get your bearings.

I can't speak to the calibre of the translation, but as a neophyte coming to the Poetic Edda, it was mostly clear and very entertaining. I did download another translation for times when I got stuck, of which there were a few, but I can totally understand why this translation is the standard one in use scholastically. I'm not a fan of stories told in poetry, but in this case it not only didn't detract from the reading, but absolutely enhanced it. I did need to keep a cheat sheet handy for some of it though. Still, well done.

This book is the holy grail of Norse literature. I have not put it down since I received it. Though the wording can sometimes be confusing, that is expected with translated texts of this age. Legendary stories of gods and heroes will keep you enthralled through the entire course of the book. I definitely suggest buying this.

What the Vedas are for India. Spiritually moving. Filled with vibrant word play and wisdom. If you are a Lit Buff, you should enjoy this well respected work. Make sure to study the intro first. If you are a Heathen, you might come to see as the closest thing you'll come to a holy text forged from the haunted halls of your ancient fore bears. Wisdom that survived as best as can be expected for you to later discover. I recommend everyone take their time while studying this book..you can only benefit from the wisdom it contains. You'll not get that from rush reading. While many people lament that Hollander's translation feels "archaic" in nature, it's really more like "true to form" and a labor of love.

My absolute favourite translation. Superb notes, and an author that offers debate and argument about translations and sources, without telling you what to think.
