~ The phone fits perfectly into the hard plastic shell that is built on the inside of the cover. The shell is black, and it is barely noticeable since my phone is also black.
~ The camera, flash and speaker align perfectly with the cutouts on the back side of the case. I have used the camera on several occasions, and the case does not come in the way of the camera lens or flash. I have also watched shows on Hulu and Netflix and the speakers sound just as loud as when the phone is not in the case.
~ There are three pockets for credit cards/driver license and one pocket that is open on two sides for some cash or receipts. I have not tried them, but I am assuming the pockets are enough for a couple of cards and a few dollar bills (5-10). I will not be using them so I don't care much for them anyways.
~ The elastic band holds the flap in place nicely.
~ The flap folds all the way back (easily) if you want to put the phone against your ear during phone calls. I don't see myself putting the phone to my ear during calls, simply because of the size of the phone, but I still think this is a necessary feature for any flip style case for phones.Read more ›
I have used others. They all have had issues ranging from pads that you have to stick on as a cushion for the screen, to kind-of sticky surfaces, to straps that are used to keep the case closed, but simply get in the way and add bulk.
I wanted something to protect my 1520. I do not like to use screen protectors, especially since they cover up the beautiful Gorilla Glass that comes with this phone. The phone snaps in easily and is held securely. This case provides the necessary cushioning needed to withstand a fall (it's already been tested). I like the feel of the material. It stays closed without a strap and without its bulge. It folds completely back when you are going to be using the phone for an extended period of time. It has a flat surface on both sides. It slides easily in or out of my front, back or shirt pockets.
As the description says, flip cases are very simple. Not everyone makes them right. My early opinion is that Poetic keeps them simple and makes them right.
First: the look and feel. This is a sexy case. The case is understated and minimalist, and while I had reservations about the texture/pattern from its online picture, I can tell you that it looks much, much better in person. I have the yellow Lumia 1520, and this case shows enough of the actual phone to give a really nice color contrast. It'd be a shame to get this case with the black phone. The only thing--aesthetically--that I don't like about this case is an unfortunate consequence of the 1520's bulk: whenever I pull this out of my pocket, anyone I'm with assumes I'm getting out my checkbook.
Second: functionality. The case doesn't tack on too much extra to an already-large phone, which is the main reason I purchased it. The flip cover, folded back, provides a surprisingly useful grip for the device. The elastic band to keep the case shut is definitely the worst feature. Most of the time, I don't even use it. The cover doesn't really flap around anyway, so you don't need the elastic, and it's poor quality--it's looking pretty ragged after just two months. The pockets and card slots, while a nice thought, aren't as useful as you'd think. I use them solely for coupons or punch/buy-nine-get-tenth-free cards (i.e, really paper-thin things). Bulking this thing up with some credit cards and bills would deform the front cover, possibly scratch the phone's screen, and definitely ruin the band even faster.
Final verdict: This is a fantastic minimalist case if you're trying to avoid a super cheap-looking slim shell case, just don't try and use it as a wallet.
The case itself is very thin and feels flimsy, I would have expected a lot better from Poetic after seeing their tablet cases. It would also be nice to find the same colors and design available across their whole range. All in all it's not that bad, it's just not that good neither hence 3 stars.
