Editorial Reviews

It has been one insane year for the members of Denver
thrash band Havok. Filled with non-stop touring, the most
recent alongside Sepultura, the four-piece found time to
piece together this special ep. Once again utilizing the talents
of producer James Murphy (Testament, Obituary), Havok
deliver two brand new songs that continue to show the
more-than-ample chops of this young band. With touring
planned to continue through summer, their metal roller
coaster is not about to stop anytime soon.

Of the handful of modern thrash bands attempting to revive the genre, among them Evile, Warbringer, and Lazarus A.D., Havok is perhaps the best. Now with two awesome demo EP's, Murder By Metal (2006) and Pwn 'Em All (2007), and two sick full length releases, Burn (2009) and Time Is Up (2011), I've come to expect nothing short of excellence from these Colorado boys. Unsurprisingly, Point of No Return does not disappoint.

I remember hearing interviews with Havok frontman and all-around awesome dude David Sanchez after Time Is Up was released in which he sounded frustrated that everybody was under the impression James Murphy (of Testament fame) produced that album. In fact, Murphy mixed it; David Sanchez produced it. We have the same situation with this EP. I see Amazon already has it wrong in the product information! For the record, it states in large letters on the back of the CD case that David Sanchez produced this EP, and James Murphy mixed and mastered it.

That out of the way, I'm not sure it actually matters who did what, because this EP kicks just as hard as Time Is Up. It opens with 2 Havok originals, Point of No Return and From the Cradle to the Grave. The former is classic Havok; it's got a catchy main riff and pre-chorus with a great bass line underlining everything else. Sanchez's vocals are harsh and rugged; the soloing and drumming are top-notch. The latter is reminiscient of Exodus and Sepultura and contains some team vocals just prior to an ultra-catchy chorus. It's aggressive, mean, and rivals Havok's best tracks in quality.

Two amazing thrash masterworks and a small collection of some of the greatest thrash songs every penned, what's not to like. Havok have been on the awesome train since their debut and this EP only scales them even furthur toward the top thrash acts of today. Its good to know Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus, Overkill, and 81-93 Metallica have a solid line of amazing bands to pass the tourch too.

A lot of people call these guys "the return of thrash" and while I agree that they are the best new thrash band around, I think the genre just needed some new blood and these are definitely the guys to deliver, however thrash never went anywhere. If anything it may lay dormant like a bear but when it wakes up, it will shred your face off. Thrash is very much alive in Havok. Fans of Exodus, Testament, old Sepultura and The Crown should be quite satisfied.

Gotta love these guys, if you like Thrash Metal and have not heard Havok you really need to give them a listen. They are a young band that sounds absolutely old school, but bring a fresh sound to the genera. Check em out you won't be sorry.
