I first saw this movie when I was in fifth grade, and watch it periodically throughout my life. I always seem to glean a new “Point” of interest that I had not recognize before. This is a great movie to watch with any age kids, and watch repeatedly as they grow for other subtle points of view.
"The Point" is a great animated film. I grew up watching "The Point" because my parents taped the movie from TV sometime when it aired. A round-headed boy grows up to the age of ten and is then exiled from his hometown of pointed-headed people because he looks different from them. He and his dog wander through a forest and come upon different characters living there, each with a lesson of some kind to impart on the boy. I won't give away the ending, but you will smile.
The Music:
Throughout the story, songs from Harry Nilsson are played and, like an animated music video, you get lost in the songs. The songs do not have much to do with the story as it progresses, but they are not childen's songs. Rather, Harry Nilsson's songs are warm and easy to sing for adult and child. As a child, I sang them all the time.
The Animation:
The animation and character design are really interesting. No anime or CGI here. It looks to be hand-painted and definitely a product of great imagination.
Recommendation:
"The Point" is a great film and songbook that you can use teach your children about the problems and unfairness of race and discrimination without images of violence. I also recommend "The Point" to any fan of Harry Nilsson or Ringo Star (who narrates the film).
Having said that, it really is a classic and it will cheer up everyone who watches it. It is a funny, thought-provoking, tale of a boy's mission and it makes its many "points" in a gentle and creative way. Kids will relate to Oblio and he will help them think about the law, crime and punishment, bullying, discrimination, ethics, character, growing up, caring for nature, purpose in life, danger and fear, and making a stand. They can wonder and wander along with Oblio through this magical treat which is a feast for the the mind, the heart, the ears, and the eyes.
The movie, with it's thinly veiled "you're unique, just like everyone else" theme, narrated by Ringo Starr and featuring many great songs by Harry himself, is quick moving and brilliantly sketched. Add a 5.1 audio track and you've got a cartoon masterpiece.
I'm not sure if I get more pleasure from watching this video in an all new format, or whether it is the pleasure of watching my grandson sing and dance his way through each viewing of the movie, or if it a blissful blend of the two, but I've certainly gotten my money's worth from this purchase.
You'll love the action, you'll love the songs, you'll love relaxing and taking it all in. Considering the great Amazon price, how could you possible go wrong?

super old school animation.
great voices (Ringo Star and the kid)
nice story and great use of language
Despite first being aired on BBC2 back on Boxing Day 1970 (grey cells may have let me down but I am pretty sure it was then) this stands that test of time.
Harrys playful songs fit well with some of the more serious lyrics and he uses his superb voice to tremendous effect to both. In the original he narrated it himself, although I think in this DVD Ringo has the pleasure.
The film has two levels - a fun cartoon with jolly music, and a serious message which is still relevant (and needed ?) today.
It is about time the BBC dusted it off, paid the royalities to his estate and let more people enjoy what was a unique talent.
Poly high
One gripe though....
Wheres Dustin Hoffman's commentary.... or even Harry's??
And calling it stereo or for that matter Dolby Digital 5.1 is a real cheek.
My home AV does it better on its own under 'Rock' or whatever. I could have done better with the Stereo soundtrack, some sound effects from the BBC Cd collection and Pro Tools in an afternoon. Shoddy presentation, it deserves much much better.
(He's got a point there) sic
