Dzogchen, a Tibetan tradition similar to Mahamudra, is taught as a radical path to sudden awakening. Aro Yeshe Jungne, the Tibetan author of this text, lived in the tenth century. On receiving and practicing the Dzogchen instructions he was suddenly awakened. These are his instructions, effective in awakening many of his students, and now made available to us with explanation. The Tibetan commentators are present day lineage holders.
There is no shortage of books with Dzogchen instructions so it’s a matter of deciding which ones to turn to. This book begins with explanations of key concepts, and then gives instructions for those of high capacity, medium capacity and finally lesser capacity with divisions within to total nine levels. The seemingly strange order (Since we conventionally work our way by learning from the easiest to the most difficult) makes sense when assuming the desirability of the fastest possible awakening for the reader. It may also mean reading the instructions more than one time, putting them in order on the second read if that suddenness no longer seems a factor.
The capacity chapters are intertwined with chapters on specific subjects such as mindfulness and wisdom. There are also question and answer chapters and even the always useful Glossary.
This book is loaded with gems and the reader will enjoy many ah ha moments. It’s easily the kind of book you read once and immediately return to reading again. Should it be the first or second book on your Buddhism read list? Better to have first learned from some more basic books. A basic understanding of preliminary practices and the concept of emptiness would come in handy, but then maybe after the first chapters for those with high capacity your Buddha nature will suddenly ripen. That happens with Dzogchen. There are many profound teachings throughout this book. Yes, this definitely should be found on your Dzogchen reading list.
