East Anglia, 1861. Alone in a first-class carriage, the Swarbricks are robbed at gunpoint. But when the universally admired Swarbrick fights back, the train robber takes more than money and jewellery, killing the man working to unify East Anglia's tangle of railway networks.
Inspector Colbeck is brought in from London, but as Swarbrick's glowing reputation begins to crumble, the line of investigation isn't clear. Is this the act of a bungling burglar, a business rival, a disgruntled son or a jealous lover? Whoever it is, they are determined to involve Colbeck in their fight. Is the Railway Detective following the right track or will he need to switch points to bring the murderer to justice?

Edward Marston is a brilliant storyteller and the construction of his plots are superb.
As usual, the novel held my attention, even after I flipped to the end to discover who the killer was. There were a number of subplots in this novel, including one featuring Mrs. Colbeck and her paintings, which I thought wasn't fully fleshed out. It felt like quite an add-on. The writer is also intent on making love bloom between Police Officer Hinton and Lydia, Mrs. Colbeck's friend, but there is so little interaction between them that I never felt it. I think the ending felt too rushed because there were only a dozen or so pages left and the killer still wasn't revealed. In that instance, I thought this did a disservice to the novel because I felt the writer wanted to wrap things up quickly.

A bonus is that with slightly dodgy eyesight (please open the opticians soon I need to see one) the book is easy to read from two aspects, the first, that I can get totally absorbed in the story - even if after so many I have a good idea of where the plot is going (good to see if I am right or not) and the second is the print is easy on the eyes.
Looking forward to the next instalment which I have on pre-order. Keep them coming, please.
