Poison is the 17th novel in Lescroart's first-rate series about the San Francisco defense attorney who is also an ex-Marine, a bartender, and a former assistant DA. As the title suggests, the case at the heart of this tale is about a death by poison.

Dismas ("Diz") Hardy, now sixty-something, is the managing partner of a small firm of San Francisco plaintiffs' attorneys that includes his daughter Rebecca ("the Beck"). His son, Vincent, is now 26 and working at Facebook. Dismas is still recovering from two gunshot wounds suffered in an earlier case. Neither he nor his wife Frannie is happy at all about his having gotten shot—again. Lawyering is not supposed to be a perilous occupation. And now a new case may expose Dismas to new danger.

The charismatic owner of a specialized plumbing and fixtures company has died suddenly at the age of 62. Although first thought to be the result of a heart attack, a second autopsy has revealed the cause to be poison. Grant Wagner had four adult children, all of them involved in running the company, and a stepson from his second marriage.

Although Wagner's death was ruled either a suicide or a homicide, the San Francisco cops assigned to the case take little time to arrest Abby Jarvis, the bookkeeper at Wagner's company and his longtime girlfriend. Jarvis calls Dismas from jail because he had defended her a decade ago on a vehicular homicide charge that sent her to prison for five years. The cops have already decided Jarvis is guilty, so the investigation into other possible suspects falls largely to the investigator Dismas retains, Wyatt Hunt. The circle of possible murderers quickly widens to include all four of Wagner's children and a former girlfriend. Meanwhile, the detectives who arrested Jarvis are investigating the shooting death of a young entrepreneur. Can there possibly be a connection between the two cases? As readers, we know that's likely. But we won't find out how for a long time . . .

A good Lescroart novel

I’m not sure why exactly but I love John Lescroart’s novels (at least most of them). The characters are all extremely well drawn and manage to be as unique as human beings are in real life - they have good qualities and annoying quirks, they make rational, intelligent decisions but they also exhibit brainless, half-baked behavior. Sometimes they are endearing and at other times exasperating. At any rate, I think it’s the characters who keep me coming back. And one of my very favorite characters in the Hardy/Glitsky books is the city of San Francisco. I was fortunate to live there for five years many years ago and Lescroart’s portrayal reflects my experience. I do wonder if the current flavor of the city is accurately depicted. I have adult children living in the Bay Area and they are not as enamored of SF as the citizens once were. They describe it as full of money grubbing, self indulgent and self involved techie types whose only contribution has been to jack up rent and real estate in general. I guess the step-son, Joey captures that type.
My other criticism is that the plots require an extreme form of reality suspension. But it’s not fair to stress that aspect too much, since that’s what we’re asking for when we read books from the detective stories/murder mystery genre. Overall I recommend “Poison” as a primo pick from this past year’s selection.

A Dismas Hardy novel is like Christmas morning for me. I have read the series faithfully since all the characters were young and full of enthusiasm, and their friendships were forming. Now many of them--Wes, Abe, Devin--have advanced in the law enforcement ranks, and Dismas is a legal elder statesman. They have become my friends, as it were. The legal process, particularly as it exists in San Francisco, is chronicled so well in Lescroart's books that I am part of the action. I find myself wondering where I, a vegetarian, would eat lunch if I hung out with these guys. And yes, it is pretty much a boys' club but not one I find offensive because it is built on real friendships cultivated over the years.
This book has multiple layers--an opioid-addicted cop, a repeat offender, a family business, and conflict within Hardy's own family, not to mention temporary rifts in the aforementioned friendships. I have to say I didn't quite anticipate "the bad guy" until he was revealed, and the tie-in with Abe's old case wasn't immediately apparent. The dynamic within the family that owned P&V was enough to cast a suspicious light on more than one possible murderer.
Abby, Hardy's client, and the #1 suspect isn't terribly sympathetic, which also helps build toward a satisfying ending.
If you have never read Lescroart, do yourself a favor: start with book 1 and read in order. There's something delightful about feeling as if you are growing old with the characters.

Just another Dismas Hardy pretty good read. Nothing too surprising but solidly written. After the last book, which featured the daughter in the primary lawyer role I expected her to at least make an appearance in this book. That was a disappointment. Recommend to any dismas hardy fan. I’m reading in an effort to complete the series. Having to write this much has taught me to never do another review.

But...the narrator is NOT good! Sorry guy but you just don’t have it. Ugh. I miss the lighthearted touch...he makes Dismas surly and grumpy. Mostly monotone. No fun jokey tone. And Glitzky? Terrible interpretation!

But..I love the characters, per usual. I had to abandon the audio and finish the book by reading it.

I have enjoyed all the previous books written by Mr Lescroart and he is a favourite author, however, in my opinion this book is not anywhere near his best. The method of killing was very unusual but I felt the whole story lacked the tension of previous books and also there is not the usual thoroughly enjoyable repartee between the main characters. Plus (having read all the previous books) I found some of the dialogue between Dismas and his wife unconvincing. For me it almost felt as if Mr Lescroart is bored with the character and although I do like the fact that Dismas Hardy and his family and friends have aged as the series progressed, I do hope that (as he is now in his mid-sixties) the character will not be retired or killed off soon because that is what this book felt like to me - but this is only my opinion and I truly hope and I want to be wrong!

Item was identified as "used - good condition" but I would disagree. The cover is dirty (as in crusty with food or something - yuk!) and the spine is clearly broken in more than one place. Not sure what is holding the pages at these spots in place and won't be at all surprised if they start to fall out with any amount of use. As I am a "keep and re-read" type, I know this won't stand the test of time. Definitely not worth the price charged for this product in my opinion.

The tension between Dismas and his wife, Frannie, surrounding his involvement in another murder case was over fraught. It didn’t ring true. Overall, though, I enjoyed the book and look forward to his next case.
