The first thing I noticed were the clash of classes. That's always a hot button for me. Aristocrat and blue collar coming together, despite the odds. It's weird because I don't like that in contemporary settings, but in fantasy...well, it's so romantic. I think because it feels so forbidden and like the element of danger is heightened. And well, it's hot too. Obviously.
I absolutely LOVE the idea of a series focused around "The Order." We have seen this before in the first book of The Order called, The Mutt. The Mutt introduced us to what I would describe as training grounds of The Order. But with elves...ELVES!!!!!!!!
I'm smitten by this author's writing. The scenes are painted in a way that takes me to another world and makes me believe it. The writing itself is superb. I mean, seriously superb.
I have to say that 1. I'm not a huge fan of mystery, usually. And 2. I don't care for shorts. But it's actually because this is a short...I can totally dig it. The mystery is resolved rather quickly. Excellent for a person of my taste (uh...simple minded with a very short attention span).
This story is hot, romantic, dangerous, and exciting.
5 stars...A must read
I am a big fan of murder mysteries, fantasy, romance between men in different classes, and women who kick ass. The Poison Within has ALL of these things. It is part of the Order Universe but with humans. The first book I read from this author was The Mutt, which is part of The Order series. Another amazing book which includes Elven characters.
I love the relationship between Karyu and Elly (short for Count Ellydhar Finn-Jánn). It is so incredibly romantic. The intimate time they spend together is sweet and steamy. I enjoyed how Kayru doesn't bother hiding his feelings for Elly.
The minor characters are also memorable and interesting. I hope the Furian and the Nymph are apart of the series. Same goes for Temper, Kayru's sergeant, who the author describes as "phlegmatic and unflappable".
The writing in this book is so detailed and descriptive. I can easily picture this fantasy world with its people, food, language, politics. Don't even get me started on the creative names of characters and places. Where does she come up with them?
It may be a short story, but it is complete. And the writer has a way with words. She paints a picture for the reader with her prose, and I found myself able to easily visualize this interesting world she has created.
There is in fact mention of off page rape, but the writer handles it well. The females in this story are strong and independent. And the story also brings a bit of modern day politics into it; I found this to be both amusing and refreshing.
I hope that there will be another installment of this story and that we get to read it soon. The romance was sweet and believable, and I've fallen for the MCs. Plus, the world building added unique elements to the tale.
Kasia Bacon is a writer I will look forward to reading more of.
Though the story is only 51 pages long you get a wide insight of the universe, the same you got a glimpse in The Mutt: An Order Short Story, the really short story and my first adventure in this fantasy universe.
This time it is about two human character, Käyru and Elly, short for Ellydhar, an earl and therefore an aristocrat. Käyru is his total opposite - in his social position as well as his appearance - with being an investigator and tall, broard and sturdy looking.
I enjoyed the dynamics in the book, the crime case was really intriguing, it was a mix of thrill, suspence and the display/discription of violence. In fact the whole story wasn't "nice and fluffy" but according to the plot it would have been weird. The story is set in a fantasy, medieval world, with all the different social ranks and ruled by those who have the most power and influence.
Ms Kasia knows how to capture the reader's attention, I was hooked from the frist page and with a really confident, pleasant writing the story was enveloped.
There is a kind of poetic way of writing in Kasia's words, an eloquently use of fitting and propper words, the different "voices" of the character clear and the differences very neat illustrated.
I won't go to deep into the actions of the story because otherwise I would kill the reader's suspense. I can only say I am really excited to read the next, full book by Ms Kasia Bacon and how the strings are (maybe) combined.
She has shown in her former short story and in this novella-like short story that she is more than capable in giving the reader an enjoyable story. A story where you turn page after page because you want to know more about the character and the actions.
The fact that Kasia Bacon included current events, political themes only diversified illustrated (and named) but still a slight mirroring of the present time is really witty but on the other hand very brave. Some may not happy about it, but I give kudos to this, I am fond of those facts. She is able to mix it pleasantly into her own universe. Very well done.
I could go on, I will end my review with giving 5 out of 5 stars. Keep going, Ms Kasia, I am really fond of your way of writing and no, this isn't a way of bribing you. xD
