In 20 years when the Switch is "retro" and the Switch eShop occupies a plot beside the Wii, Wii-U and 3DS eShops in the digital graveyard, people will still be able to access and play the whole, complete game from this cartridge. That's all good and well for 20 years from now, but why do I care right now? Because people like me who do not participate in download-distributed content because actual ownership matters can now enjoy the game in its entirety. Not to mention this is a great deal for anyone new to the game that wants to check out the additional content without fiddling around with an online account. It also doesn't hurt that Pokemon games almost always hold their value, and these games with the baked-in expansion content are going to be among some of the most valuable in the years to come. I would not be surprised to see these going for well over $90 on the used market less than 5 years from now.
This is the full game, plus the full expansions and post-launch content built right into the game cartridge. No Internet required, and no fuss. My Switch does not connect to the Internet (ever) and I had no problem playing this right off the cartridge. If you already have an existing save for the launch version of the game, it just picks up where you left off and gives you a message that you now have the passes for the new areas. You don't have to install or load a thing.
I can't really review the extra content yet because I haven't had a chance to play much of it, but what I've seen so far has been great. The new content - the Isle of Armor and Frozen Tundra not only add new areas to explore and new Pokemon but also expand the main story. There are tons of new ways to find and capture older Pokemon that were not originally included in the base game, which is a big deal for people in my household.
No doubt a lot of people will balk at the price. But the fact of the matter is that this is what games cost these days. The publishers try to hide that fact by selling you incomplete games for the same $60 price tag that has been pretty standard for about two decades now and then selling the rest of it to you piecemeal. Conversely, this is a rare opportunity to pay for the whole thing up front instead of paying the same or more in total for a downloaded version which you can't actually own.
