A cool drink of water provides such a relief on warm days and with the insulated Polar Breakaway Water Bottle your 20oz of fluids will remain cool for twice as long as a regular water bottle. Its double-wall construction, replete with an inner foil liner, is optimized to keep heat out and cold in - exactly what you need to keep your drink cool as the temperature rises. The Breakaway bottle also features Polar's ZipStream High Flow Cap which utilizes a self-sealing valve to prevent leaks and delivers a high flow of water when the bottle is squeezed. The Breakaway bottle holds 20oz of liquid, is made in the USA, and is BPA and Phthalate free. First, let's talk about the valve, which is rather innovative and fully, easily removable from the lid for easy washing by hand or in your silverware tray in the dishwasher. As opposed to an old fashioned bike bottle with a lift valve that will spill out water when the bottle is tipped, this valve requires a lift and a squeeze. Without the squeeze, nothing will come out. Further, the flow rate of this valve is variable depending on the force you apply when squeezing. I tested several bottles of water in the sink to see how much I could vary the stream, and it was amazing. A gentle squeeze created a narrow, continuous stream of water, whereas a forceful squeeze created a gusher--a stream probably 3-5x as large as the narrow stream. And because the valve is designed to pass variable streams, it does so easily. Even a forceful squeeze is not met with resistance. Rather, the force is transferred directly from your squeeze to the stream of water. Very cool. On a side note, if you own other Polar bottles, YES, you can put this lid onto those bottles, too. It says so right in the materials that come with this bottle.
Next, let's talk about two other features that make Polar bottles awesome, aside from the nifty new ZipStream valve. First, MADE IN USA. Whether you are a patriot who prefers to buy things made in USA (like my Made in USA Trek Madone bike) or you just trust the quality and safety standards of products made domestically, Polar bottles tout the Made in USA logo, which makes me feel better drinking from them. Second, the strap. I love the grab strap, which you won't find on most other bottles. When you are heading down the road on your bike and reaching for a bottle, there is no easier way than grabbing the strap around the top of the bottle. I couldn't tell you the number of times I have dropped other brands of bottles while grabbing them out of my bottle cage. It won't be happening with a Polar bottle.
Lastly, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the stylish designs of Polar bottles. This bottle is no exception. The metallic insulating material is both functional and fashionable, and I LOVE the brightly colored valve. It's a small touch, like colored shoe laces in your dress shoes. I'm all over it.
So, I'm glad I decided to give this new ZipStream valve a try, and there is no better bottle for an innovative valve than the already awesome Polar bottles. Buy it, and you will love it.
The valve cap works very well. In the closed position, it does not leak, no matter how hard I squeeze on the bottle. In the open position, I get a strong water flow when I squeeze. If you're drinking sugary sports drinks, you need to thoroughly clean your valves out after every use or mold will grow in there pretty quickly. The valves on these bottles are very easy to remove and clean (just twist out and push back in).
Smaller size makes a world of difference on smaller bike frames
Keeps liquids cold much, much longer
Valve is simpler making it easier to pop out & clean (say NO to throat infections!)
The only gripe I have is purely cosmetic: I sure wish Polar would offer some new colors. I've had this first pair for almost 6 months now & have been wanting to get a few more but am waiting as I'm hoping Polar will introduce some new colors/designs soon.
