The Polar F6 heart rate monitor is a great choice for using in large groups where other exercisers might be using wireless training gear that could interfere with your own signal. The F6's coded transmission prevents crosstalk with other monitors so you'll get a personalized workout--even in a class environment. It's packed with innovative training features to help you toward your exercise goals, including:
The F6 displays your heart rate, exercise time, and average heart rate.
- Zone Pointer: A visible and audible feature on the display of your heart rate monitor showing your target heart rate zone and where your current heart rate is within that zone.
- Polar OwnCal: This feature shows your energy expenditure during one exercise session as well as your accumulated kilocalories during several exercise sessions. You can set daily and weekly exercise goals in terms of calorie expenditure with the OwnCal feature. Because the OwnCal tracks both the energy expenditure during one exercise session and the accumulated kilocalories during a longer time e.g. one week, it helps in achieving both short term and long term goals.
- Polar OwnZone: This feature guides you through an appropriate warm-up routine and automatically determines a safe and effective exercise heart rate zone--your OwnZone--while taking into account your current physical condition.
- Polar OwnCode: This technology blocks unwanted signals from other heart rate monitors, ensuring disturbance-free transmission of your heart rate data.
The Fitness Bullets feature shows a bullet on the monitor's display for every 10 minutes spent exercising/training in your target heart rate zone. The Time in Target Zone feature calculates the amount of total exercise time spent in your personal target zone. You can use this feature together with the Total Exercise Time to determine the effectiveness of your exercise program. You can also better assess your training data using the included Polar Precision Performance (PPP) 4.0 software and the SonicLink feature, which wirelessly uploads exercise settings to the software or to Polar's web service.
Other features include:
- Display of heart rate, exercise time and average heart rate
- 24-hour clock with day/week indicator and stopwatch
- Large easy-to-read display with split screen
- One-year average battery life
- Water resistant to 30 meters (100 feet)

The first EKG accurate wireless heart rate monitor was invented by Polar back in 1977 as a training tool for the Finnish National Cross Country Ski Team. The concept of "intensity training" by heart rate swept the athletic world in the eighties. By the 1990s, individuals were looking to heart rate monitors not only for performance training needs, but also for achieving everyday fitness goals. Today, the same concept of heart rate training is being used by world-class athletes as well as everyday people trying to lose weight. Polar is the leading brand among consumers, coaches, and personal trainers worldwide and the company is committed to not only producing the best products, but also being the leading educator on the benefits of heart rate based exercise.

What I'm saying is, it's pretty easy to set up and you can find basic info. There are some advanced settings that would probably be helpful if I get around to reading the directions.
On the down side, the strap is somewhat awkward. I discovered that if you put the strap on below the sports bra, the strap wanders around and down your torso until your heart rate reads zero. So now I put the sports bra on over it to keep it in place. Seems to work pretty well.
One complaint I have is that it doesn't "talk" very well with the computer on our spinning bikes. This isn't a huge deal to me, but you pretty much have to decide to trust one or the other, because they rarely agree.
The watch itself is rather blah and feels pretty huge on my arm. My only other complaint is that anytime my heart rate jumps signficantly (like going from warmup to sprints), the monitor takes several--and I do mean several--seconds to reboot. I'm not sure if this is because it's a cheaper model or if that's just the way all monitors are. But I'm pretty sure my heart doesn't go from 130 to zero and back to 145 again.
Overall, I think it's a decent product and it is worth $100. And yes, I have found that my actual heart rate does surprise me sometimes.
The transmitter band, on the other hand, is not the greatest. It works and it's not particularly uncomfortable, but I have to be very conscious of the movements that I make because the front part (8" or so) of the band is plastic and it puckers out, away from my body. This isn't terribly difficult because I'm using the watch and band on my stationary bike. I've noticed that as I've worn it more, it's begun to mold to my abdomen, but It still seems too big and doesn't fit as tightly as I would like, even when it is tightened all the way. I do not notice it slipping, but that could just be because I am being so conscious of keeping my upper body still. That being said, I am not sure how the band will fare when the weather warms up and I try to jog with it on.
The watch is great. If you really like the style or color of this watch absolutely get it! However, you should also consider getting the Polar WearLink+ Coded Transmitter and Belt Set . It's a flexible cloth band that is much easier to wear (my mom has it). It also happens to be the transmitter belt that comes with the Polar FT4 Women's Heart Rate Monitor Watch which, by the way, you can change the battery yourself on...
The first watch I received was a dud - there was a band of non-functioning crystals that passed right through the first numerial of the time/heart-rate, making it hard to tell between 5,6,8 and obscured the 1 in 10 or 100. I worked with Amazon's amazing return policy, and within a few days received a perfect replacement.
I've been wearing the F6 as a regular wristwatch without any problems (ie, it fits my wrist well, has a large, easy to read watchface and is attractive enough to not be self-concious about wearing a sports-watch.) When I wear it exercising, occasionally the chestband's sensors need some water on them to get a decent read, but it works perfectly all through the work out without the need to be readjusted. So far I've only jogged and biked - no swimming, but I'm looking forward to testing it out when the weather gets warmer :P I've been using it for a month so far an it's been a perfect companion to my exercise routine! - One warning: the band can get discolored easily (I wore it weeding one day) and doesn't clean 100% back to it's factory color. The watch-face seems to be made out of a slightly different plastic that cleans much easier, so the visible part of the watch stays looking nice.
