This would be great if it worked. The design is good: clips onto the side of the pot, the top part is made of a material that doesn't get too hot so it is easy to remove, and the scale is clearly readable both in Celsius and Fahrenheit.
I wanted it to make toffee, which needs to reach around 305 F. The one we got worked pretty well until it got to around 250 F, slowly increasing to point to around 270 F - and then not rising above that, no matter how hot the sugar got.
The first time I tried it, I noticed that the toffee started getting really dark and the thermometer was stuck at 270. The second time, I used another (different model) thermometer for comparison. While the other thermometer had reached 310, this one was still at 270 F. The toffee was indeed around 310, as when I emptied it onto the tray it was a dark caramel color and it was the right toffee consistency. I uploaded a graph showing the real temperature vs the temperature read by this thermometer (see under customer images).

I was sad that this thermometer didn't work.

Got this one for canning, but I've expanded to using it for pasteurizing egg whites for buttercream as well. The thermometer has a sliding clip on the back so you just stick it on the pot, slide it to the height you want and you're good to go. The thermometer bulb is suspended a couple mm from the bottom of the metal plate, so you can push it against the bottom of the pan and not worry about blowing the bulb with direct heat. It also has handy markings which tick off the various candy states if that's what you want it for. Cleaning is a breeze since I just toss it in the dishwasher.

I almost feel guilty not giving this 5 stars since it is a well made product that does what it is supposed to. The reason I don't is the way it is designed it has to be in relatively deep liquid. It is very bulky and has a tab at the end that requires at least an inch and a half of liquid. I prefer the type that will sit pretty close to the bottom of the pan. Don't hesitate to purchase this - it has good build quality and is rugged - just know it is designed more for large deep pots.

I use this when I make yogurt and the temperature of the milk is critical. It works perfectly and the clip on the back keeps it attached to the side of the pan securely. I like that it has a metal piece under the ball on the bottom preventing it from touching the pan and giving a false reading.

This is a versatile thermometer--good for candymaking, but also for homebrewing, frying, or any other application that needs precise temperature measurements. The construction is sturdy, and the design is handsome. Thoroughly recommended.

I used it once, it worked okay and things fried at the speed the recipe called for. Then I washed it. The numbers came off, and I was only using the scratchy (green) side of the sponge and did only a couple of swipes before I realized it. For something that needs to have oil cleaned off it, you'd expect a bit more. Get something else. The photo is what it looks like now, before going in the trash.

I purchased for making caramel sauce (which I do regularly). My goal temp is 350 degrees. This thermometer registered 335 and the caramel all burned badly. (The truly annoying thing was that I KNEW it was burning and yet my faith in the thermometer was great enough for me to second guess myself and let it happen.) I then tested it and two other gauges by boiling water. It was dead on at 212 degrees. I did another batch of caramel and my ancient, cheapo guage and my termapen matched (and kept anything from burning), this one was once again way too low.

The wide frame made it a little less secure in a smaller pot (where I tested the water). In my larger pot (for caramel use), it held well. If it had been accurate, I would have been pleased with it. I've already printed my return forms...

The thing you won't know until it arrives is that this produce is a full foot long. It's a candy thermometer for a giant. I thought it was a joke when I opened the package. This thing is enormous.
