WE CALL THE POLICE HEROES. They're the ones breaking up fights and putting the bad guy in jail. But what happens when they go home to their families? Journalist Amy Morrison lived another side of policing in her marriage to a violent, controlling cop who drove her to the brink of suicide.
In "Police Wife," Morrison and other police wives share their gripping and inspiring survival stories with award-winning investigative journalist Alex Roslin as he takes you inside the tightly closed police world and one of its most explosive secrets: domestic violence in up 40% of police homes, which departments mostly ignore or let slide.
Now in an updated and revised second edition, "Police Wife" gives a rare front-seat look at the amazing struggles and courage of abused police spouses worldwide--from Los Angeles to Montreal, Puerto Rico and South Africa--the ordeals of a handful of intrepid cops trying to change policing from within and why the abuse is an epidemic, one that may be getting worse.
We learn that police officers commit up to 15 times more domestic violence than the public. But most police departments don't fire an officer even after a criminal conviction for domestic violence. Officers in some departments are disciplined more severely for stealing or lying than for domestic violence.
"Police Wife" is the first journalistic book on the abuse epidemic. It shows how violence in police families affects us all and is closely linked to botched responses to 911 domestic calls at other homes, police killings of African Americans, officer sexual misconduct and growing inequality in our communities.

Review
- SGT. AMY L. RAMSAY, PhD, Ontario, senior police policy analyst, former president, International Association of Women Police, founding president, Ontario Women in Law Enforcement
"Kudos and gratitude to Alex Roslin for speaking on behalf of the too-often silenced voices in abusive police families. This book needs to be widely circulated.... This book transforms the police wife's private agony into a public issue, provides a plethora of recommendations for effecting change and powerfully concludes that both private and public players share responsibility in liberating and empowering victims."
- LEANOR JOHNSON, sociologist, Arizona State University, founder of ASU's African and African American Studies Department, former member of FBI advisory board on police stress and family violence
"Amy's story mirrors mine in so many ways. Like her, I lived in fear for my personal safety and my life for years. Like her, I experienced violence at the hands of a police officer who was my intimate partner. Like her, I felt trapped in a system that would protect the perpetrator because of the badge he carried.... Batterers are attracted to professions in which they can have power and control over others.... All of us associated with this profession must make it clear domestic violence will not be tolerated in our ranks."
- DEPUTY CHIEF DOTTIE DAVIS, Retired, Fort Wayne Police Department, Indiana, former chair, Governor's Council for the Prevention and Treat-ment of Family Violence, Indiana
"Roslin has done an excellent job in Police Wife, painting an accurate picture of domestic violence in the police family. The average citizen is unaware of the issue that has been well known for years to the men wearing a badge and their agencies. Roslin's years of research reveal the heartbreaking violence that many officers inflict on their wives and children. Police Wife is an important read for any police officer's spouse, but is also recommended to anyone interested in a significant issue in today's society."
- DET. ALBERT F. SENG, PhD, Retired, Tucson Police Department, Arizona
"ALEX ROSLIN HAS THOROUGHLY DOCUMENTED the pervasiveness of woman abuse perpetrated by male police officers and also the seemingly universal tendency of these officers' peers and superiors to close ranks around them, protect their careers and shield the bureaucratic evidence from the possibility of public scrutiny. "Roslin has brought to the surface a mostly hidden social issue that should matter greatly to every adult. His book is a must-read for anyone who has ever experienced-or known or worked with someone who has experienced-the misery of domestic violence."
- DEBORAH HARRISON, sociologist, University of New Brunswick, author of The First Casualty: Violence Against Women in Canadian Military Communities, former member of the Canadian Forces Advisory Council to the federal Department of Veterans Affairs
"I appreciated Ms. Morrison's candour. It is apparent that it has taken a great deal of courage to open herself and her story to the public.... Police Wife delivers."
- STAFF SGT. MARGARET SHORTER, Retired, RCMP, president, International Association of Women Police
"From the very first page, Police Wife sensitizes readers to the horrors of domestic violence, highlighting the extra challenges faced by victims of officer-batterers.... Police Wife takes a comprehensive look at a complex topic.... It's a substantial reference that includes endorsements from experts as well as practical resources for victims in the appendices."

A little repetitive and long-winded in places but highly informative, including tonnes of websites and agencies that support police domestic violence victims. Useful recommendations included as well.
Police wives share Unbelievable stories of what happens when law enforcement don’t enforce the laws upon themselves. More regulations are needed to ensure the mental well being of police don’t carry their stress home.

Alex Roslin has created a resource that is personable, honest, shows integrity, is heartfelt, informed and life changing for those who are impacted by violence committed by RCMP or those in similar careers globally.
If you've ever come across what you know to be an aggressive / offensive / abusive member of a policing force you likely left the interaction feeling afraid, maybe even grateful to have gotten away relatively unscathed. I'm betting you may even have gone home to hug those you care about with more depth. I'm guessing it never crossed your mind to consider what life is like when the doors are closed on that Law Enforcement Officials (LEO's) home. I'm certain you were so grateful to just get home again, that asking yourself what it would be like to have that come home to you at the end of the day, never crossed your mind. I'm grateful you didn't have to stop and ask what you would have done were there no chance to simply leave, or to report the abuser AND be kept safe, have a home to return to, or to be believed rather than blamed and targeted. I'm sure not many of us ask what it was like to have lived as Lucie Galinas did. I'm grateful for the women included in this book. Grateful to have heard their stories, and grateful for the sense of hope in knowing their lives, somehow, managed to improve.
OIDV (Officer Involved Domestic Violence) isn't even something we track in Canada, yet. Through works like Alex's book we begin to challenge a system designed to privilege those who abuse others, and give ourselves the hope of safety somewhere in our futures.
This book is a perfect gift for anyone impacted by violence committed by RCMP. It is a timely gift for anyone thinking about a career in Law Enforcement or Legal Arenas, or the services and careers connected to those that cerate the safety nets into which we're supposed to be allowed to land. This is a comfort to me, and I'm sure will be for those who have been through this and are still fighting to he heard. It is an excellent resource for those who want to be supportive of them while they leave. It is a necessary conversation starter for anyone who is still breathing air, including those who are seeking to move our society towards equality.
This is a book filled with practical realities, and resources designed to help those impacted by violence in the general public as well as that specifically committed by RCMP or other Paramilitary organizations. It helps those of us who've been through it to KNOW we're NOT alone, it helps to empower us by exposing our reality, and it helps those who are tasked with trying to protect us from further harm to reconsider the generic and indifferent methods of dealing with attempting to protect those impacted by interpersonal acts of war and terrorism against women and children. This book offers a glimpse at a shortlist of ways that policing forces can use and abuse resources to terrorize those they take an interest in. We have barely lifted the lid on the realities and nightmares that are the lives of those targeted.
IF I could ask for anything else it would be a list of active investigators, lawyers, psychologists and other professionals willing to help those of us who are marginalized, vulnerable, and who have been or are targeted.
IF MONEY WERE NO BARRIER.
I would start a list of such persons, and I would begin the effort of taking on one case after another and liberating those harmed by the violence that's legitimized by Paramilitary law enforcement. I would begin the effort of replacing the RCMP with something more functional and meaningful for our society. I would work with those already freed, and safe, to network ways to ensure that as a reality in every relationship. And I would hope. I would hope that with every case resolved, with every life freed, that the excuses would be silenced, and that change would become normal, growth would become normal, compassion would become normal, I would hope, to rehumanize a dehumanizing organization / institution, and to do the same for all those who were harmed.
There is a great need in the lives of so many to be given back a voice and our rights. If I could ask for anything more, I would ask that those with the skill, interest and abilities to help to put themselves out there for the sake of those who need them. I would hope for this book to land in those hands, and for the compassion in the hearts of those reading to facilitate efforts to find a way to take the burden of writing of such horrors off of Alex's shoulders, by tackling the issues of domestic violence's amongst "policing" forces, and holding to accountability.
Let's build a world that's safer, and Alex's book is one step in that direction. I am grateful for his compassion in having worked with the many people he did, grateful for his strength and courage in exposing such a sensitive topic, and doing so with such care for others, and for his compassion for those still embroiled in such nightmare situations by making sure he listed what resources he could to try to provide as much of an opportunity for successful change or accountability as we can offer at this time.
Alex's book is a moment of respite from the reality of being gaslighted by an Institution that self-aggrandizes in order to justify abusive preferences.
My thanks not only to Alex for his necessary and timely book, but to all those who helped bring it to life, fill it's pages with the frightening reality, and to offer hope through awareness and change. Thank you, one and all.
