Hupfeld certainly paints a great deal of medical delivery landscape with a very soft brush, but never really explains (and as a former hospital administrator he should know) why health care costs are so ridiculous. How and why do hospitals set their prices and why not make them all public before patients and insurance companies get the bills. He skirts around the "Never Events" that occurred for years (and are still happening) until the Insurance Industry refused to pay for such errors as cutting off the wrong leg! Follow the money, folks. Why not post the prices for tests and surgeries outside the hospitals just as other businesses do? Patients should know that these costs control their insurance premiums.

Stan has provided an insightful study based on his decades of successful experience as CEO of an integrated delivery network. He presents a straightforward, fair and comprehensive analysis of the basic health care policy choices that we face. Particularly interesting is his ability to get to the real essence behind the simplistic sound bites that drive so much of today's discussions on health care policy. Stan realizes that health care policy has real effects on people and unintended consequences are possible.

I agree this is an important book for anyone who is genuinely interested in health care, though the great thing about it is that a reader does not have to be an expert in health care or politics, it's so well written that anyone reading it will get a lot out of it. Very highy recommended.

After 20 years of reading about our health care system, this is the most succinct and clear analysis of what is going to be the most important problem our country faces. Mr.Hupfeld brings excellent analogies to this anaylsis that makes the problem clear to anyone. What is amazing is how he takes a very complex issue and breaks it down into simply understood factors. This is a must read for every congressman before they try and fix the Affordable Care Act!

This should be read by anyone with a serious interest in reducing the share of GDP this country devotes to health care.
Not all his ideas will gain traction but most of them could. His final plea for electronic medical record systems that are
accessible away from home base could be costly as all the major hospitals have picked up EMR systems, at huge expense,
which are incompatible with each other. He has a good handle on the need for tort reform to reduce health care costs
and an excellent idea on how to start.

Stan Hupfeld has adroitly summarized the pros and cons of the much-maligned, oft-misunderstood Affordable Care Act. Stan's writing is a refreshing departure from the diatribes, apologetics, and unfiltered ranting that has characterized so much of the discourse about health care reform. Having surveyed the arc of health care reform, I am quite certain that the debate will continue well into the middle of this decade and perhaps beyond. Hopefully, Stan will continue to share his unique perspective, imbued with his long years of experience as a health care executive.
