REVISED, EXPANDED EDITION

The first manuscript of this book was thrown into the fire just minutes before a secret police raid in Communist Poland.

The second copy was personally delivered to a contact inside the Vatican, only to mysteriously vanish.

The third was pieced together in 1980s New York by the last surviving member of an underground research team, only to be banned from publication...

Until now.

Forged in the crucible of totalitarianism,
Political Ponerology is written by psychiatrist Dr. Andrew M. Lobaczewski, who draws on his experience and clinical insight during the decades he spent under the crushing heel of the Nazi and Communist regimes.

Decades ahead of its time, and brimming with unique insights and depth of vision,
Political Ponerology explores a genus of highly adapted and charming psychopaths who bend political parties, institutions, and media to their depraved worldview, dividing and hypnotizing entire populations, and paving a virtuous path to genocide, mass repression, and gulags.

From the darkness of past regimes,
Political Ponerology brings you the keys to understanding and protecting yourself from today’s spellbinding ideologues, and tomorrow’s dictators.

This new edition has been extensively revised and expanded, the translation improved and annotated with the latest supporting research, examples, and new material previously unavailable in English.

"Essential reading for concerned thinkers and all sufferers of past and present totalitarianism." —Michael Rectenwald, author of Google Archipelago and Springtime for Snowflakes

"Fascinating, essential reading." —Philip Zimbardo, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Stanford University, and author of The Lucifer Effect

Life is hard and so is this book. But if you're deeply concerned about what's happening in America these days, most especially if you value your Freedom, you must find the time and you must summon the will to work your way through this most brilliant analysis of the origins of totalitarianism. Crucially, the author also offers possible solutions. I can pretty much guarantee this book will change the way you understand the world.

In my opinion, this book is essential reading. Political Ponerology describes how ideological movements can be co-opted and subverted by those with a pathological will to power, and how pathocracy can result. In short, this book does an excellent job of explaining how the inmates can end up running the asylum.

I am extremely impressed by the author's argument and thoughts regarding psychopathy, societal movements and political organizations/leaders. I'm only about 50 percent through the book now, but a comprehensible gestalt is forming that helps make sense of what otherwise seems like a completely disordered society that's sometimes barely hooked up to reality and, at times, malevolent. The editor's footnotes are valuable too. The references themselves yield about 20 more books as resources. I would definitely recommend it for readers interested in psychology, sociology, political movements and the general insanity present in too much of modern society. (Please note that this review is for the first half of the book alone.)

My only caveat would be that this book tests one's reading comprehension skills. One of the more simple paragraphs yielded the following scores. Other paragraphs were much more complex.

    Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease 2.1
    Flesch Kincaid Grade Level 23.4
    Coleman Liau Index 15.5
    Automated Readability Index 24.6
    Average Index 20.1

This is a technical text. It has an interesting history of publication, having been written 3 times, destroyed once, & never submitted for publication a second time by an “alleged trusted associate”. The subject is interesting to those of us who are curious about evil and how it manifests in seemingly “normal” people.

I have read much of it. I like the book, but it is slow moving. I can understand the book, but because of the scholarship of the author he uses a much larger vocabulary that you see in must books-like professorial? books for example.

Received a book that starts on page 181. This book appears to be print on demand and clearly has quality control issues.

Thomas Merton is quoted as saying, "If you want to study the social and political history of modern nations, study hell.". You'll want to also study "Political Ponerology' also as this new edition is vastly improved, revised and expanded with the latest supporting research available. I would say it's the missing link to understanding the events and news of the day.

The publication itself was a pretty rare one but thankfully it has now been published. As to the content, I have yet to read several other books, but form browsing the contents, it seems a very timely publication especially with the emergence of the extreme right wing activists in the USA, Russia and Germany.
