About the Author

Dr. Adam Garfinkle is founding editor of The American Interest. He served from 2003 to 2005 as principal speechwriter to the U.S. Secretary of State (S/P, Policy Planning). Prior to that, he was editor of The National Interest. He has held appointments as professorial lecturer in American foreign policy at the School for Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University. He has also taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Haverford College, and other institutions of higher learning.Dr. Garfinkle served as a member of the National Security Study Group (as chief writer) of the U.S. Commission on national Security/21st Century (the Hart-Rudman Commission), and as an aide to Senator Henry M. Jackson (D-WA). His essays have been published in many magazines, journals, and newspapers, and he has appeared on national and international media. Dr. Garfinkle is the recipient of awards and grants from the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright Fellowship Program, the American Academy in Berlin, the German Marshall Fund, the United States Institute of Peace, and the Moshe Dayan Center for the Study of Middle Eastern and African Affairs (Tel Aviv University).Dr. Garfinkle received his Ph.D. in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania in 1979. He is married and has three children. He resides in Potomac, Maryland.

Persuaders: Read and Heed this Book

According to "The Review" chapter in "Political Writing" by Adam Garfinkel, a book review is "an attempt to persuade based on an attempt to persuade". Assuming you are interested in persuasive writing, I'm going to attempt to persuade you to buy this little book. ("Little" is the author's adjective.) Even though only "Political" is in the title, the book is about persuasive writing. If you want to be a more effective persuader in writing or speaking, politically or otherwise, you should read and heed this book.
The author has taught the subject at university level. His material shows its class-note heritage, with reading assignments and exercises for each chapter. He has practiced the craft of persuasion for his own benefit and that of others in academia, in government and the press. Don't expect dry lectures and only ancient references; Copyright is 2012. His examples, chosen from famous and not-so-famous people, sparkle with insight and challenge with goals to emulate. Specific chapters contain tools and tips for every conceivable venue of argumentation from essays to op-eds to blogs. His chapters on better writing cover not only the how, but also the why.
The only missing reference is [[ASIN:B00849DOU2 Birkenstein's, Graff's The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing (They Say/I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein (Paperback - Jan. 10, 2006), available from Amazon in print and Kindle. Although some will scorn the Graff-Birkenstein template approach, the templates complement Garfinkel's exposition and can be the friend that he recommends in his segment on Writer's Block.

Solid book for learning methods of communication in politics

Garfinkle’s book is probably the most pointed book on various forms of communication in the political realm. He has a framework of rules that guide how to advocate your position and defend it. Speeches, essays, editorials, memos, ceremonies, and book reviews are covered well. Garfinkle is not a fan of social medial, and exploiting the advantages of technology for political communication. Otherwise, I recommend this book for those looking for a framework to organize political commmunications.
