Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Former Secretary of State Baker's memoirs offer an engaging and candid behind-the-scenes look at the conduct of U.S. foreign policy during one of the most tumultuous periods in recent history. The dramatic political convulsions of his tenure?the Tiananmen Square massacre, breakup of the Soviet Union, collapse of the Berlin wall, German reunification, and Iraqi invasion of Kuwait?form the backdrop for Baker's intriguing account of his forays into the vicissitudes of international diplomacy, a tale laced with personal anecdotes and intimate portraits of major world figures. Confusing chronological arrangement and sometimes tedious details may put off some readers, but those who persevere will be well rewarded. Comparable to his predecessor George P. Schultz's Turmoil and Triumph (Scribner's, 1993), Baker's book is a valuable contribution to the literature on contemporary U.S. foreign relations. A welcome addition to both popular and academic collections.

So intriguen and how he manages to tell it as a story got me hooked, could not stop reading it!

This book should be required reading in every college-level class in International Relations. The author gives lesson after lesson in the complexities and frustrations of diplomacy and the level of leadership and teamwork necessary to achieve any favorable result. I could not help but admire Mr. Baker's tenacity and dedication. It's my opinion that, if our Country were so fortunate as to have more officials in high office like Mr. Baker, we would have far fewer problems in the World. That said, this is not a book for the casual reader. It is not an "easy read". Almost every page demands critical evaluation and attention to detail.

What a ride James Baker had - from accidental politician in the 1970's to helping peacefully transition the world from the Soviet Union and the reunification of Germany...all without a shot fired. Led the successful coalition building in support of expelling IRAQ from Kuwait. Served three presidents and advised more. We owe him a debt of gratitude for his work and putting in writing his views of how to get the most out of diplomacy.

I never liked James Baker back in the day but have a whole new appreciation of him now. Essential source material for U.S. diplomatic history and very relevant to today.

This is a great book that gives readers a true understanding of James A. Baker, III. He's one of the most significant and consequential statesman of the past fifty years, a man that forever changed Washington, and how the game of politics is played. Highly recommended.

Great reflection by a marvelous leader. Interesting comparisons to current events.

Although quite detailed for most readers, I found the contextual information as valuable and the policy positions of the Bush I administration. He assisted the reader with the intricacies of foreign diplomacy that one cannot pick up in local news reports about positions taken by any presidential administration. I personally appreciate his insight into the psyche of foreign leaders as we continue to work out some the same policy problems still facing our country. Kudos!
