In this book, Adam Kotsko examines the development of the atonement tradition within the history of Christian theology. Juxtaposing historical and contemporary figures, he shows how the doctrine has implications for how we understand sociality. Along the way, Kotsko demonstrates how to intervene in theology in the spirit of Bonhoeffer's call for a religionless reading of the tradition.

Kotsko provides an interesting historical investigation of classic atonement theories based on the paradigmatic tension of 'social-relational' ontology vs 'individualistic' ontology. After investing four church fathers and pairing them with a contemporary/recent social or political theorist, Kotsko argues for a more thoroughly relational ontology as fundamental to atonement theory.

He concludes, after an analysis of Karl Barth's atonement and Dorothee Soelle's representative atonement and their emphasis on the established community of God as an integral part of the continuing efficacy of the atonement, with his own original "social-relational" proposal.
