Politics in the Sudan: The Art of the Laughable is a compilation of political humor articles and cartoons by Mohamed Beshir Hamid produced over the span of nearly four decades. The articles and satirical cartoons, many of which are published here in both English and Arabic, provide insightful commentary from the perspective of a political scientist who witnessed firsthand the drama of politics in the Sudan. The majority of the articles were published at the time of their writing and are replicated here without revision. However, brief explanatory notes have been added whenever necessary to convey a general picture of the events that inspired them. In addition, all articles contain political cartoons that serve to illustrate the contents as well as being – hopefully – a delight in themselves.
