Download the Polk Omni app to your phone, connect to the speaker via Wifi, update the settings for your home network and go. it is exactly the same process that one uses to set up Apple Airport networks. if you can setup your Airport Extreme or Express basestation, you can set this speaker up. My network is "elaborate" multiple base-stations all extending across the house on both the 2.4 and 5ghz spectrums.
Good, not great. it's got four directional speakers in the chamber. it's clearly intended for single room, single speaker setups (though speakers can be setup as stereo pairs). it's every bit Polk audio good, but their size limits their maximum capabilities. Don't read this as a negative, they 100% meet my expectations.
Fantastic, fast, Amazing iPhone app with an "Apple" like experience. I've tried *others* where you have to recreate all your playlists, rankings and all of that -- THIS IS NOT THE CASE with the omni app. The Omni App feels just like using the music app on my iPhone, all of my playlists, ratings, music and all that were just there. Flawless. Additionally the app does everything you'd expect, you can create speaker groups, play different contrnt on different groups -- everything you'd expect -- all with an amazing App experience. VERY WELL DESIGNED.
I'm not a heavy streaming user, I've not had a chance to thoroughly test these features. playing with it a little bit, it seemed to work as one would expect that it would.
FIT/FINISH - QUALITY
Again five stars here, the quality of these speakers, the way they feel in your hand, all just great. The portable rechargeable version has plugs over inputs to give them a bit of weather proofing so you don't worry about using them by the pool. Really well designed.
The one thing I wish, I wish they had the ability to stream without an iDevice like the Bose can. Of course the Bose cost 3 times as much. For the price difference I can buy an old iphone just to use as a media server / controller.
I would like to be able to stream directly from iTunes on the Mac, these speakers are not AirPlay, but it's trivially easy to setup your Mac (or PC) as a media server.
OVERALL RECOMMENDATION OTHER ALTERNATIVES
Definite buy. I bought 4 of them after researching the alternatives:
* Generic AirPlay Speakers - bad quality, connectivity issues
* Connecting speakers to my existing multiple basestations as "AirPlay" -- very enticing, alternative - quality self powered speakers cost as much as the Polk, and the polk provide more features.
* Bose - "headless" streaming, Airplay, high quality - SUPER EXPENSIVE - problems with mixed mode (2.4/5ghz networks)
* Samsung -- I tried these. they offer the same promise as the Polk at a very competitive price, the APP with these is SOOOO BAD. I could never get them to work properly.
The instructions could use some work though. The setup is ruff. The app will walk you threw it though. Just make sure to be next to your router when you set this up. Then once you program your speaker with your wireless settings and speaker then move it to where you want it..
Takes the speaker awhile for it to connect to the router.. could be my router/range (TP-LINK AC3200 Tri-Band Wireless) but even right next to it, it can still take a few mins to connect. Used my samsung galaxy tab s2 tablet and note 4 without problems using there omni app. Can serve your local music and other music streaming music services threw there app.
Also appon registering you get a free app to use on it on your pc too.. have not tried it yet on the pc.
Bummer was no tidal on there omni app currently.. though I seen some other play-fi app thst said there last update now uses tidal and read that it said if you own polk or other speakers that have there own app to use that and here it works perfectly with the polk speakers and is basicly the same app but will work with tidal!! Super sweat!! :)
Happy with it overall though and I'm sure my daughter will love it for her iTunes music!
Also read you can use a usb to network Dongle if needed... also will work with a network share drive and the app would control it as well. And of course you can just plug a device straight to it with a 3.5mm plug as well.
Honestly.. new to wireless speakers and thought I was buying a Bluetooth speaker for my daughter and I step bought the latest and greatest tech by accident with wifi/hifi sound which is way better then compressed Bluetooth sound! Happy!!
They use WiFi, so you get more band width, than Bluetooth only sepakers
The Bad: terrible, really terrible WiFi interface. The only available WiFi interface is a custom modified DTS "playfi" It ONLY works on Iphone or Android platforms, so forget streaming your music library from your Macbook or PC. There are some work-rounds, but they are clumsy and buggy.
There is NO treble, bass, bass, bass
Of course Polk Audio is too cheap to pay DTS to write them a simple three band equalizer. You know, they kind that is available everywhere for free or 99 cents.
All that said, the interface for the Sonos speakers is even worse, so there you are.
