Polk has carefully crafted the Hampden speakers to deliver superior sound. The teak-veneered MDF enclosures virtually eliminate unwanted vibrations. The speakers sit angled to position the sound field properly when you're seated at your desk. The speaker cable uses 4-pin Euro-style connectors to ensure tight, secure connections for minimal signal loss. Midrange and bass frequencies are handled by a pair of 4-1/2" composite polypropylene cone woofers, while a pair of 1" silk/polymer soft-dome tweeters produce smooth highs. Each driver is powered by its own dedicated amplifier channel: the system uses 30 watts x 2 for the mids and 10 watts x 2 for the tweeters. Sound is clean, detailed, and impactful. Want to enjoy music from your smartphone or tablet? Just pair your device to the Hampden and stream wirelessly via Bluetooth. The system features aptX audio coding, an advanced form of Bluetooth that allows higher-fidelity sound with compatible devices. Hampden is backwards-compatible with earlier forms of Bluetooth, too. The Hampden speakers are ready to rock your party. When you and your friends download the free Polk Audio DJ Stream app from Apple iTunes or Google Play, the fun can start. As host, you can authorize three other friends to stream music to the Hampden. The app builds a playlist, taking each tune in sequence. Everyone with the app will see the playlist of upcoming tracks and get to vote “Thumbs Up” or “Thumbs Down.” You can change DJ assignments around, so everyone has a chance to share their favorite songs. And when the party's over, the vote tally will show you which DJ had the hottest tracks.

For best sound the really did seem to work better with the sub connection despite me having a good quality sound card. It seems that the dac is in play at all times since they use a class d chip for the amp section so the usb connection keeps you from making a unnecessary A<D conversion. My curiousity got to me and upon taking them apart I discovered a burr brown converter and D2A 4 channel class d amp chips. Very good components for multimedia speakers!!! Only room for improvement is despite how good they actually look a black finish would be a welcome option. Cabinet is well braces and features a downfiring port. I could see how the quality of whatever they sit on could really make a difference in the sound. Although I am all for wired connections the Bluetooth sound quality was above average and the range seems quite good. Another bonus feature, the euro block or Phoenix jack as some of us call it connection from the master to slave speaker (right to left) can be extended to allow for flexible placement options as the connectors can be easily removed and any 4 conductor install wire can be used.
JUNE 29 2016 UPDATE: Like other reviewers I started experience the system powering down even while music was playing (connected via USB to my MacBook Air). After some initial scalding steam poured out of my nostrils I concluded this made no sense. It's not like the speakers would start doing this for no reason - makes no sense. Then I went on Polk's forums and found a range of workarounds. This one has 'worked' for me. If you have a Macgo to System Preferences/Sound. Adjust your volume setting all the way down to the left. Then uncheck MUTE. Then flip volume setting up halfway. You'll see the MUTE setting check and then uncheck itself. Why does this work? I have no idea. But it works. I've had KEXP playing softly for the last 90+ minutes with no interruption.
The bass is a lot better than I expected; these far outperform any cheap desktop subwoofer I've had before. The range does not go as low as my media center dedicated subwoofer so in some songs you might notice some lines missing (the big drop in Clint Eastwood by Gorillaz for example) but the bass it can do it does well. I work from home and will play these pretty loud; I had to rearrange some things on my desk due to rattles and I'm pretty sure these killed a camera body that I left sitting too close for too long.
The USB DAC is a nice feature as well. These are good enough that I can hear the noise in the analog line when I do use it. For any Linux users out there I've had good luck with the audio in Ubuntu and Debian. pavucontrol is helpful for selecting sources and setting how to output to the speakers.
My only gripes:
The speakers will power down if not used for awhile so sometimes I don't hear anything, turn it up out of habit then it finally wakes up at a much higher volume than I would like. Second, these need to sit on a flat surface for the bass to work right. I like to wall mount everything I can, which doesn't work here.
