Product Description

Spectacular Surround Sound In Minutes With No Drilling, No Wires, No Mess Not only does the F/X not need wires, but it doesn't need multiple enclosures or dedicated power amps either. It's designed to deliver surround sound from a single cabinet. The new F/X Wireless Surround employs our Controlled Dispersion Array and Polk Digital Logic technologies to solve the installation problems posed by conventional multi-enclosure, wired surround sound speaker systems. A 2.4 GHz transmitter that connects to your home theater receiver or surround sound processor lets you enjoy the convenience of wireless 5.1, 7.1, and 9.2 surround operation, and the simplicity of placing the F/X loudspeaker on the floor, a table or a shelf.

From the Manufacturer

The one of a kind F/X® Wireless Surround Speaker is a single compact system that creates a completely enveloping, realistic surround-sound performance without the rear speakers, wires and, most importantly, hassles. The F/X Wireless Surround works perfectly in any size room and fits unobtrusively into your décor on the floor, on or under a sofa-back table or on a wall shelf.

Key Features

  • A completely self-contained full range amplified surround-channel sound system.
  • State-of-the-art 2.4GHz transmitter sends the surround channels from your receiver to the F/X Wireless Surround’s onboard receiver for instant, lossless signal response.
  • Polk Audio’s patented Controlled Dispersion Array (CDA) technology delivers enveloping surround left, surround right and back surround staging for 5.1, 7.1 surround in any room environment.
  • Ported enclosure with dedicated woofer for unexpectedly big, full bass response.
  • Polk Digital Logic® and a 3-position DSP Controller enable you to place the F/X Wireless Surround in the most convenient place of your choosing - on the floor, table or on a wall shelf.

Take A Look Inside This Product

  • A completely self-contained wireless surround-channel sound system.
  • Four 2-1/2" Full-Range Drivers
  • 5-1/4" Woofer
  • Compact 120 Watt Multichannel DSP Amplifier.
  • Rock Solid Triple Enclosure Multi-Braced MDF Cabinet

Patent Pending Technology

Developed especially for the F/X Wireless Surround, Controlled Dispersion Array is comprised of two tightly grouped speaker arrays, in combination with phase and amplitude tapering, that produces a radiation pattern of narrow beams. CDA permits the F/X to project sound toward reflective surfaces to produce an immersive, spacious surround field, rich with spatial cues required for proper localization of surround sound effects.
Polk Digital Logic is a sophisticated processing algorithm that enables the F/X Wireless Surround to reproduce accurate and believable surround sound irrespective of your listening position relative to the speaker. This means you can place the F/X Wireless Surround on the floor, the table or up on a shelf, and at the push of a button give your ears the cues they need to locate the surround images in space.

The Polk F/X speaker addresses an important issue with many home theater systems. For $150 it would be the ideal product - if it worked properly. I got mine last week and was attracted by the design. Unfortunately what it offers in terms of appearance, it is utterly lacking in performance.

First of all, the setup is less than trivial. I had to repeat the setup several times until I had a setting that was somewhat tolerable without the speakers distorting heavily.

The main show stopper, however, is the fact that there is a constant popping in the speakers. I was told by Polk customer support to try to switch off all other wireless gadgets. But hey, how can I be expected not to use my internet or stream audio from my cell phone anymore. This really sucks. Even with all wireless devices switched off the speaker would still not work reliably. Especially when I was walking in front of the transmitter the speaker would make a clicking noise every so often.

Another problem is that the transmitter would go into standby whenever there is a moment of silence in the movie which results in a screeching noise in the speakers. Then when the transmitter wakes up again there will be a loud plop. Hey, if you have fallen asleep then this may actually be a nice feature. Maybe I should contact the Polk Audio marketing people.

I would actually be willing to spend $250 on this speaker if I could get it to work. So I ended up returning this speaker and got me an Amphony 1600 wireless speaker kit and also purchased a pair of Klipsch speakers. With the Amphony, I get 80 Watts per speaker which is close to the Polk Audio rated wattage. It works at 5.8 GHz rather than 2.4 GHz and thus far I have not had any issues with interference.

When it comes to ease of setting this up, there's no comparison. Simply connect four wires from your receiver up to the transmitter box. Plug the speaker into an electrical outlet and place it behind your couch. Refer to the distance table in the setup guide for the correct values to enter into your receiver's configuration. (They don't recommend using Audigy or another automatic setup.) That's it. I was able to go from 5.1 to 7.1 while simultaneously removing two thick wires that had been running under the living room's area rug. So from this perspective the product is a total win.

Unfortunately, setup only lasts until you actually watch something. From then on, you have to live with the results and I was only able to tolerate a month before I brought my side speakers back and added two small rear speakers for 7.1. The lack of audio fidelity is extremely frustrating.

Movies and TV: Either crank up the volume or be prepared for this speaker to go into standby on a regular basis. When that happens you hear a faint chirping sound, which is mildly annoying but tolerable. What's bad is that when the speaker then gets told to produce sound again it will often produce a loud popping sound that not only brings you jarringly out of what you're watching but can literally make you (and any pets in the room) jump. The speaker will also sometimes lapse into producing static for which there is usually no solution other than turning it off, unplugging the transmitter, waiting 10 seconds, then plugging them back in and resynchronizing them. Not exactly conducive to enjoying a movie! For the record, I did try moving the transmitter around and ensured that there was nothing between it and the speaker other than the couch. No dice.

I received the 3rd transmitter from Polk Audio this week. Finally, everything works perfectly.

This is a really great wireless speaker - just be sure you get the latest version.

I will also give great kudos to Polk Audio's Technical Support team. I spoke with them several times in getting this resolved and they were super.

Finally, after trying 2 different speakers and 3 different transmitters, it works great.

Ok - so the first unit I purchased received 1 star (would have given 0) for reasons you can read below.

Then, the 2nd unit I purchased, the "New & Improved" model was so much better, I gave it 5 stars. That is, until I found out that overnight, the unit would lose the sync between transmitter and speaker, and the only way to get it back was to unplug the transmitter, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in.

So, now I am downgrading it again to 3 stars. When it's working, it is great! But, it's a pain to have to unplug/replug it every time I want to use it.

I spoke with Polk Audio Technical Support (800-377-7655) and they are sending me yet another transmitter (3rd one). We'll see if this solves the problem.

If it does, I'll be back to update my review.

Well I was glad to see that when I received my 2nd speaker after returning the 1st one (see my previous review, below), there was a nice red label on the box that said "New & Improved - Series II". So, at least there was the hope that there actually WAS a version where the problems had been fixed.
