Page is well read, and it shows. This is a compelling personal bio, but it also works as a signpost guide to polyamory. Page tackles some tough issues in this book, and does it with great humor and some smart references. If you follow her blog you already know she is a fantastic writer; but here she offers a very personal, sometimes messy story of how poly can go wrong, and eventually right. The dialogue is well done, the story itself is compelling, and there is a lot that can be learned.

It’s not the prettiest thing to read but it’s definitely a realistic window into the human experience. It’s touching in places and heart wrenching in others. If you are on a journey into polyamory it’s absolutely worth reading. I have been a follower of the poly.land blog for a while and this really gives insight into those early explorations of opening up a marriage. What can go right and what can go wrong. It’s well written and touching.

I think the memoir is useful on its own, although I would have preferred some deeper analysis about the dynamics of some of the people and polyamory dynamics. It reminds me a lot of More than Two, in which I was mostly horrified but fascinated. The writer circles around criticism but never makes the full plunge, which is a shame, because there's a bigger story to tell.

(I understand not wanting to write a Sad Abuse Memoir, but the chipper tone is also jarring.)

This book was gripping, funny, and well written. Below is one of my favorite pieces that had me giggling as I read.

BDSM stands for Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, and Sadism and Masochism. Yeah, it should really be BDDSSM, but BDSM looks less like a cat sitting on a keyboard, so they went with that.

If you are starting out in the world of polyamory, do not read this book first. Go get "More Than Two", read that, and then come back and read this book as a "how NOT to". Successful polyamory is about clarity of communication, and being able to trust your partners. There was no clear communication and no trust really shown in any of these relationships. Many people think polyamory is simply about "having a lot of sex", and this book does little to dissuade that. In reality, polyamory done well is all about being able to talk about your own needs, your partners' needs, and your metamours' needs without passive-aggressiveness. The only thing that was really consistent across all of the authors' relationships were abusive tendencies and an inability to read warning signs and extricate from the relationships early.
This book is also in serious need of an editor. Journal snippets and IRC chat logs are unnecessary and boring filler.
In the end, I finished the book just to see what sort of train wreck it would end up being, but this is in no way to be used as any sort of guide for how to be successful in polyamory.

Not just a memoir

This memoir is open, honest, and a great in-depth look at what discovering and exploring ethical non-monogamy can look like. Page tells her story eloquently, in a way where even she is not always a "good guy;" a fundamental truth that is often lost in memoirs that depict the world as revolving around the writer. The "Poly Signposts" are invaluable to people both new and old to polyamory, and provide an in-depth and measured explanation of the benefits and costs associated with both monogamy and polyamory.

In short, this isn't just a memoir, it's a resource!

I will say that there are some parts that are perhaps sexually graphic enough to make some readers uncomfortable, but otherwise, I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

Great for going beyond Poly 101

There are so many books out there that are non-monogamy or poly 101- rehashing jealousy, scheduling, health and safety, etc, over and over again. I was really refreshed to see that Poly Land did not do this. As someone that's been poly for a while now, it feels that every new book about poly is just another answer to the question "What is poly?" versus going more in depth about various relationships and "case studies" of poly in action. Poly Land was that book that didn't spend tons of time explaining, as so many books have, what non-monogamy is; Page went right for the stories that showed the ups and downs of poly in all of their complexity.

Some of the best parts of the book were her presenting her chat logs with various partners, combined with her now looking back on them. I saw my own conversations reflected in these ones and appreciated her including them.

People new to poly will enjoy this but for experienced poly people, it'll be refreshing to not have to read another 101 book and instead dive into stories that reflect some of the real issues that appear in poly, as messy and painful but also beautiful as they can be.

Poly Land is is an honest account of Page's journey into Polyamory. So brutally honest (as the title promises) that I found it beyond infuriating when things weren't working out for her, because through reading her blog and through the book itself she comes across as warm and loving, so I felt like I was constantly cheering her on to find the path that would bring her the most joy.

A great read for anyone who is open to the idea of non-monogamy/polyamory, seriously considering it, in the middle of it, or been living it for years. A wonderful new resource for those of us who are open to exploring.
