Editorial Reviews

Review

“The text provides enough detail to keep youngsters interested and the pages are filled with clear maps, colorful illustrations, current-day photos of the site, and reproductions of artifacts. Three-dimensional paper sculptures of contemporary buildings allow readers to peek inside, and a pop-up image of the volcano is a real attention-grabber.” ~School Library Journal

I bought this book for my two young granddaughters and was thoroughly entranced with it myself. It is brimming with lush drawings and fascinating information about this wonderful historic place. Definitely worth the price. More than just a coffee table book. Beautifully rendered.

Spent the fall reading all seven volumns of Colleen McCullough's Masters of Rome series and this a delightful compliment to that reading and enchanted the child with-in. The the clever pop-ups and enhancement of a holiday treat to myself - it is something I take out of the draw (and put the cats in another room) and can loose myself in this book for many special moments.

This book will surely remain in my extensive collection of pop-up books. The text is informative and well-written, the illustrations are beautifully done, and the mechanisms give a three-dimensional view of ancient Pompeii and of the excavations done since the catastrophic eruption for which Vesuvius is well known. It easily earns its five stars!

It's been years since I've browsed through a pop up book...usually they are made for fairly small children. This one, the Pompeii pop up, is geared towards young adult to adult readers; I bought it as a gift for my eleven year old granddaughter, who is very interested in Pompeii and ancient history in general. This coffeetable size book is very well made, the pop ups are intricate and durable, and I found it to be informative and worthwhile. Very recommended!

The children in my second grade class were fascinated by this book. One of the students had visited Pompeii and brought this book to share with the class. We had studied ancient Greek and Roman art, so this was a wonderful addition to those lessons.
