catturati dai giapponesi, alcuni soldati inglesi con il loro comandante, il colonnello nicholson , vincitore di un premio oscar, sono costretti a costruire un ponte ferroviario sul fiume kwai. nonostante il crudele trattamento inflittogli dal colonello saito, nicholson da' prova di un inflessibile coraggio e l'adempimento di questo incarico diventa per lui un ossessiva questione d'onore. nel frattempo, il quartier generale inglese invia un commando con l'incarico di distruggere il ponte. un film monumentale con un finale esplosivo ed indimenticabile.
