"The way Garland bends buildings and curves images to convey a feeling of motion is particularly delightful and creative."

If your child has a connection to NYC then they will enjoy it much more than others. It's a nice walk through NYC, but the story in and of itself is just not that catchy - the dog just kind of goes through the city. The description of the book is more exciting than the book. It's the only holiday book we have that I'm not sure we'll ever read again.

My 4 1/2 year old grandson loves this story. In early December, he made his first trip to New York City to celebrate his great-grandmother's 100th birthday on Long Island and was enthralled with his first airplane ride, his first yellow cab ride, the small amount of snow (we live in SE Alabama) and the fact that we spent an extra night near LaGuardia Airport because of weather.
Souveniers of the trip were: a pin given to him by a Delta pilot, a toy Delta airplane, a toy New York City taxi cab and especially this book. He still asks to have it read to him several nights a week. and his favorite quotes are: I"I'm outta here!" and "the dog who is glad to be free".
I'm very happy with the message: Freedom is nice, but the most important thing in life is family. It always gives me an opportunity to discuss putting people ahead of things, pointing out that in the end Bart love Max more than freedom.

The story and the artwork are cute and endearing. Even as an adult I anticipate reading this multiple times during the Christmas season.

i have been racking my mind all night while i slept to try and recall what about this book reminds me of a book or tv show from my kid days??! i was raised on "School House Rocks" i wonder if it is something like that? the little yellow man ... he would spin on a "lazy susan" around glasses and dishes ... still thinking ... good read. illustrations are great and fun. like u r right there in the city ... checking out the scene.

I just read this book with my 5 y.o. daughter for the first time and we LOVED it! Having been to NYC around Christmastime, we both could appreciate all the places the pooch visited and the magic of NYC. I would definitely recommend this book and will look forward to reading it around the holidays.
