As far as I can tell, the levels are the same levels from the Wii U version. The graphics have been downgraded a little for the 3DS, but the animation and cuteness is still full-force! It's just as much the full game on the Wii U. In fact, if you have a new 3DS it runs at 60 frames per second! (On my daughter's 2DS it still runs 30 FPS). Everything still looks woolly and wonderful, but everything isn't as sharp as it was on the Wii U. It's still just as bright and colorful.
The overworld has been simplified. It's no longer 3D. Instead you can walk on a 2D platform to pick from levels or you can just touch the level you want on the touchscreen below. I like the 3D overworld on the Wii U, but it's easier for my girl to find the level she wants on the 2DS.
Poochy isn't used much if you aren't playing in the easier mellow mode. In mellow mode, you have three poochy pups following you that are infinite eggs, that help you find secrets, and that fight bad guys for you. Right now my girl is playing normal and doing pretty good. I'm a little sad that she can't have Poochy friends show her where secrets are unless she picks the super easy mode! You can still use the Poochy Amiibo to call Poochy on demand for bad guy help, but my girl is on a 2DS and we aren't going to carry the old 3DS/2DS amiibo reader everywhere. The new 3DS systems can read the Amiibos directly, but the older My understanding is that we can unlock a patch later to have the same Poochy call that the Amiibo does. It's just my girl wanted Poochy in the game and there is not as much as much as she wanted. She still does get a poochy level for every world, but they're pretty short.
But she does get Poochy in the videos! One of the real stars of the show is the videos that unlock every day. They are super cute. And she likes trying to answer the questions it asks about the videos. It would have been really cool if they would have unlocked during the gameplay as part of the story, but really they're just 30 unrelated shorts. You get a new video every day for 30 days so there are 30 videos total. The ones I've seen so far are 40 seconds long.
There are new patches to unlock and you can design your own yarn Yoshi's from scratch or with patches you unlock. You can also unlock Yoshi patterns by scanning Amiibos. My daughter hasn't messed with this much yet, so we'll see if it gets her attention.
My 5 year old girl and my 7 year old girl both love this. I don't think there is enough new to be worth owning on both the Wii U and the 3DS, but we now own both and my daughter really loves having her own copy and like having it on the go. But if you don't own a Wii U, this 3DS version is definitely worth owning. It's very easy, but it's super cut platforming fun for kids.
Why purchase this when we already owned Wooly World? Well the reasons are that they added levels and content to this release as well as the fact that now we can play on the Wii U with one title and on the 3DS with this game. The added content includes Poochy in the mellow mode. You can call for Poochy's help in the game to help find items, and navigate obstacles. This has been especially helpful for our eight year old. I liked the fact that you can design your own yarn Yoshi in this game and share your creations via spotpass. The game also comes with these little "yarn mation" videos that look like they could have been user created shorts. You unlock a new video every day and they have a little question about what you watched and you have the opportunity to answer correctly to earn more gems.
This is a high quality game and I consider it a must buy if you own a 3DS. It is the same game as the WiiU title, but with added levels and some additional content. If you have played through the WiiU game then you might not want this one, but if you haven't yet experienced Wooly World by all means get this!
I saw a while ago that they were making Woolly World for the Wii U only and I was sad because it reminded me so much of Yoshi's story on the 64 that I always played. I was trying to find a pre-order for the Switch actually when I stumbled upon this and, with Poochy added no less, I had to get it.
And I am not disappointed in my purchase. It might not be as high def as the Wii U version, but I think it's cuter with Poochy and the Poochy pups in mellow mode.
A great and fun game to play a level at a time when things are slow or boring.
