Cute if Slightly Confusing Counting Book

This was a fun counting book, if slightly confusing even for an adult. I really liked the space theme and the brightly colored illustrations. However, I did not like the small print, esp in the Kindle edition, and found it very hard to read. I did find some things confusing and perhaps little children would too. For example, on the first page the term “vortex” is used. I hardly know what a “vortex” is, and I doubt a small child would either. I am not sure why the numbers are listed in pairs. People don’t count in pairs, so I am not clear why the book matches numbers up to teach counting. From what I gather, the book is supposed to be a riff on the classic “One, Two Buckle My Shoe,” counting rhyme, but if that is the case there should be a Note to Parents at the beginning of the book to make that clear. I also don’t know why the paired numbers are “fighting.” Surely, tho the book seems to try and teach lessons about getting along/making up, there could be a more cheerful way to teach counting/numbers relating to space. I also didn’t exactly understand the whole “poof” idea; the book says the point is to “join them back together,” but I don’t see how drawing the numbers to a flask (the effect is lost in the Kindle version btw), joins them together. Finally at the end of the story Aden is not mentioned again. What happened to him? Did he just disappear? Another mention of him at the end of the story would be a nice way to wrap things up. Overall, tho there are fun pictures and an unusual theme, this does not seem like the best book to teach children how to count.

Arielle Berg has designed her learning-about-numbers book POOF 123 around an interesting but challenging premise. On the easy side, the book encourages children to participate in the story, both by touching the illustrated numbers and the magic flask that solves their conflict. More difficult, however, adult readers should be prepared, for the basis of the conflict: the numbers have had a fight and need to be brought back together. No other details are given, so the reader has a lot of latitude and responsibility to frame the terms of the fight if they think it’s appropriate. Readers should also be prepared to explain where the concept of "poof" comes from. Berg’s illustrator, Isabel Casal, gets children involved with an eye-catching assortment of bright colors and an outer-space theme. Children will find the rhymed text lets them anticipate the directions each pair of numbers will receive. Children who like the book probably enjoy other picture-books that encourage their participation and let them become contributors to the story. What did the numbers fight about? Why do they need to get back together? Children who like the book will have fun telling you!
Children who prefer to be carried away into an established story by language and pictures may be less enthusiastic.

Counting made fun and easy in space

While the book 'Proof 123' by Arielle Berg was a new take on an old theme, it fell a bit flat in terms of originality. The storyline had a strong start but the thread was lost along the way--in fact, I forgot that they were in space. I did love the interactive aspect of the book and I thought it was very clever to add it in.
Words used like 'vortex' sent up a red flag, however, as I can't imagine any 2-4-year-old understanding what a vortex even is. Additionally, the book, from the get-go, introduces emotions (anger) and present the numbers clearly in conflict and expressing emotion, but never addresses it. It feels like too complex a thing to present to a kid and not give any context too.
The illustration, done by Isabel Casal, was sleek and accessible, fun and expressive. The colors popped and the lettering was easy to read, if not a bit small at parts.
On the whole, this book does do its job and anyone wanting to teach their kids numbers in a fun, space-themed way will have success.

Poof 123 is a book designed for young ones learning to identify numbers by helping Aiden Astronaut reconnect the numerical inhabitants of Planet 123. The illustrations are vibrant and colorful, and the rhymes are catchy. Overall it is very visually pleasing. However, I think that the instructions for the book are too advanced for the intended audience and are a bit confusing, especially when reading in Kindle. I read the book in the Kindle App on my PC and I could only get the pages to move the intended direction by tapping the flask alone; when following the instructions as written, the pages always flipped backwards instead of forwards. I thought the "poof" was cute, but didn't really get why it was the thing that helped the numbers make up from their fight. (Why were they fighting in the first place?) For the real "touch & learn" experience, I'd go with the hard copy.

I found this book to be lovely, colorful book – which is perfect for holding a child’s attention. I was initially a little confused by the Flask/Poof idea ~ the child touches it and the numbers are friends again. (Maybe a little something is lost in the Kindle version?) I do appreciate the idea that by touching the book and interacting with the page that children will be more engaged. This book would be great when you are introducing the idea of numbers to your children.

As your children get closer to Kindergarten, I think the beauty of this book may be more in the opportunity for teachable moments. The numbers are angry with one another…why? How do they resolve their differences so they can be friends again? The book never explains the reason for the fight, which allows the parent or teacher to fill in the blanks.

It’s almost like getting two books in one!

One thing I would say is that Aiden, who your child is helping to bring the numbers back together, shows up in only one page after the beginning of the story. It might have been quite effective to add him to the illustrations trying to help the numbers. He’s there with 7 and 8, but not with the others. Maybe he could have been lending a hand to pick 3 up off the floor, cleaning the ink off the wall with 9 and that sort of thing. Or at least he could have been back at the end of the book when all the numbers had made up.

The story and the pictures were engaging, and once I figured out how to do the instructions on the Kindle app on my phone it was easy and great fun. Hopefully the author comes out with some longer books for older kids, I think my 4 year old would have loved this more if it was a bit longer.
