Editorial Reviews

Vinyl Edition: FREE MP3 download card included.

Pool Party, the new album from Atlanta-based rock band PONDEROSA is bursting with neo-psychedelic sounds, amorphous guitars and earthen harmonies. It is the result of a sonic transformation for a band that realized within weeks of the release of their debut record, that they were already going in another direction musically. Aided and inspired by producer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, MGMT) Ponderosa gave their imagination free reign and delivered a diverse album that pulls them away from the cliched term southern rock and finds themselves spiritually at home within southern indie.

Ponderosa's new album "Pool Party" couldn't have started out with a better song title, "Here I Am Born". It is a pretty dramatic change of direction in musical styles from their debut album which had more of a roots country rock type of a sound, think of an early Kings of Leon before they got all big. So with their new album "Pool Party" I'm not sure if they got new members or just decided to take their sound somewhere else but whichever it was I agree with their decision. "Black Hills Smoke" along with other songs on the LP is very reminiscent of the Fleet Foxes, Band Of Horses or My Morning Jacket style which I personally am a big fan of and I say the more the merrier. "Navajo" is by far my favorite song, it has radio friendly written all over it. Not that that is what I look for in a song but if there goal was to write a hit they accomplished that. It could be one of my favorite tracks of the year. The next couple of tracks continues you on the same musical journey and then "Get A Gun" comes along. I don't know if it's the title and the way he continually repeats it makes me think it would be an awesome music video to make. Also in the song when he is not telling someone to get a gun, I know I'm going out on a huge musical comparison ledge here but it reminds me of track that could be meshed well in Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". Now I'm thinking of Dorothy searching a munchkins house for a gun to take down the evil witch. Anyways I digress, for people who don't know what the heck I'm talking about look up "Wizard of Oz" and Pink Floyd on YouTube.

Pool Party is definitely on my top 10 list for 2012, one of those albums you rush to tell your friends about when you hear it. Let's hope Ponderosa's next album is in the same musical track as this one, I think they are on to something good here.

Imagine Band of Horses and Panda Bear collided whilst riding bicycles in the dark right after both tried surfing for the very first time, but on completely different beaches. The ambulance is driven by Fleet Foxes.

Joking aside, some great original music from this group.

Strong songs with an unabashed veneer of sonic experimentation. Strong vocalists. Wonderful musicians. Inspired production. Repeated listens are rewarding.

Hunt down some live performances on Youtube, these guys are the real deal.

though, if i had been a fan before this album i'd probably be wondering if they drank a little too much of the Band of Horses cool-aid. the sound of the previous record was clearly southern rock-ish and this one is washed in reverb, a sound that's going on quite a bit lately. not that its bad, its not, its very good. i just needed a few extra words for my review.

2nd album from Atlanta, Georgia band takes a huge turn from the rootsy Southern style rock of
their debut. These are anthemic & floating, soaring psychedelic guitar rock songs powered by
three guitars and 3-part vocal harmonies. A strong combination of classic rock influences and
dreamy indie psych expansionism. Like a combination of Pink Mountaintops, Flaming Lips,
Fleet Foxes, Everest, Pink Floyd, U2, MGMT.
