About the Author
Mitch Prinstein is the John Van Seters Distinguished Professor of Psychology and the Director of Clinical Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He and his research have been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio, the Los Angeles Times, CNN, U.S. News & World Report, Time magazine, New York magazine, Newsweek, Reuters, Family Circle, Real Simple, and elsewhere.

Far too many popular psychology books are rehashing the same studies. The author will expose you to research that has never been shared outside of academia. Research that is embedded into the narrative, easy to digest, and requires minimal knowledge about psychology or science.
The fact is, Dr. Prinstein is a great storyteller. He weaves together meaningful studies, interesting stories, and important questions to ask yourself. The highlights of the book:
- in Chapter 2 he provides a fantastic framework of the 5 types of kids/adolescents/adults in terms of their likability. This is based on seminal work in the 1980's that has been neglected.
- in Chapter 3 he discusses how we are wired to follow crowds with a discussion of the 4 problems with popularity. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book
- in Chapter 6 he discusses how our sense of popularity is built-into our sense of self (for better or worse) and more importantly, why.
- in Chapter 8 he dives into the complexity of parents, with their own popularity issues and concerns, raising kids who manage their own. A thought-provoking chapter with some sexy science.
In some ways, we are frozen in adolescence. The world remains the junior high school lunchroom where you stroll to find the table you want to sit at, the table you don't want to sit at, and the table you did sit at. Frozen in the past, many of us are unable to escape the behavioral patterns during that time period and fail to outgrow what worked then to fit in that no longer works in adulthood.
This is an important book with beautiful prose.
I hope it gets into more people's hands.
The author's discussion of status vs. likability added a fresh perspective and I think it has actually benefited me personally as I began to understand I'd rather be likable than just plain popular or have some kind of status. It helped me feel better about myself when I realized that many people seem to find me likable even if I may not have as many friends or followers as others. Quality over quantity--a good goal to strive for.
Also, although the author backs up his points with evidence from research, the science doesn't bog down the reading or get boring. Glad I bought it. I recommend Popular to anyone who loves psychology and sociology or just wants to learn more about social dynamics in contemporary Western culture.
