The original world is ending book.

The original book predicting that the world is coming to an end if we didn't listen to him.... then another, then another...all with predictions about what WOULD happen ...and didn't.... I'm an "environmentalist" with an earned MS in plant ecology so I know what is going on. He predicted that in the seventies we would all be living on artificial islands because of overpopulation....ummm no...so another book and more predictions. none came true.
The World Health Organization itself predicts NOW that the worlds population will stabilize around 2040 ....notice not collapse and that the problem is not "having kids" it is tyrants that won't feed their people.

the author was 100% wrong as to what the future (2000's now) would look like; however, the thing he has foretold could still happen especially now during this pandemic. I enjoyed reading the book and read it with quickness and ease. I look now at the authors lectures on Youtube that he give he is very insightful.

Positive: It is an interesting study putting the real problem of demographics into its wider context. The author makes his argument clearly understandable without hiding behind too many incomprehensible maths.
Negative: Ehrlich definitely adopts the point of view of the "supreme white man", who deems colored people as below him. The most striking example is found in Chapter 1 "The Problem" when he describes his ride in a taxi with his family into a hotel through a slum in India. We clearly have the tourist shocked of not finding his conveniences from back home abroad on the one hand, the idiots and barbarians on the other. Fortunately this perspective has changed in the meantime.

Like any book the Population Bomb was published in a given time in a given context and with a given level of knowledge. It can therefore be easily understood that he did not include the declining birth rates in the Third World as well. In this respect, the book has become a historical source of the late 1960, an era long gone by.

To sum it up: An interesting read for anyone who wants to know more about the early days of ecologism and care for the environment. For a novice in demographics it is too outdated, and for a statistican and/or mathematician it is too simplistic.

So much of what Paul Ehrlich wrote some 40 years ago, he predicted clearly and has been coming to pass. Yet the concern about overpopulation and its results - both global and in our country alone - seems to have dropped off the radar screen. Overpopulation IS the root cause of so many of today's issues, and yet it is not talked about as an issue or as the cause of societal and survival problems.

How much human life can our planet support? Science and society cannot keep up indefinitely with overpopulation. What will it take to renew awareness of overpopulation as the core issue of the future? Al Gore, we beg you to champion the cause.

I had given away my last copy of The Population Bomb some years ago and thought it a good idea to have it in my Kindle Fire library for occasional referral. Instead I received my first Kindle bomb. It appeared in a totally illegible format: a collection of disorganized fragments; hundreds of misspelled words; garish editing marks; frequent gibberish. Illegible indeed. Had it been a print book a return would have been no problem. But I have been unable to reach anyone at Amazon to assist in removing this rubbish from my Kindle Fire and replace it with an authentic copy. Alas!

Love it or hate it the Erhlich definitely succeeded in bringing focus on population related issues. As seen in the negative reviews posted here people have taken the time to consider the issue(s) involved. Any list of influential texts on the environment and environmental activism will include The Population Bomb. It also is a period piece that gives insight to the time period it was written. People are still moved by Erlich's premise and are compelled to comment even 50 years after the book was published.

This book is a must-read for everybody,

ahead of it's time but now it's time has come (for the masses to understand the concepts).

It's required reading for the sake of humanity but also for those who don't realize that the whole 'cataclysmic armaggedon' scenario is principally based on the need to 'reset' population levels and create a more consistent level of existance for all of humanity.

(which cannot be done by allowing the majority to 'breed' mindlessly while expecting the 'good life', which only creates mindless production/consumerism and environmental and quality of life degradation)
