Poppy, sweet Poppy! She is an anxious little thing who has a heart so big she is forced to keep a lot of secrets in this story, while facing her own personal problems with Ryan. I am impressed by her, because there are so many friends that depend on her, her brothers, her parents, and she is facing her own struggle of trying to have a baby. I admire how Laura writes about a clumsy woman, a vulnerable woman, a real woman, that you can be surrounded by so many people but still feel utterly alone when you are facing something so tough. Ryan is hers though, I melt for these two. They make me feel so happy. Of course I wanted to smack him sometimes, you know “men” ahaha, but his heart was always in a good place. He was masking his insecurities, but his love for Poppy is so sincere.
Jazz is a mess, but in that care-free strong way. She has an idea she follows through with it, she learns things the hard way and I found myself frustrated at her because she is overwhelmed at the moment and pushes Ollie away. Scene after scene I was bouncing my leg, shaking my head, but you can’t help but to love her because again her heart is always in a good place. Jazz the loud one, Poppy the quiet one, equally strong but their presence is different.
You will wipe a few tears of laughter away; I swear that at times this reminded me of my family. There is always that single one bringing a strange character around, the mom telling you how it is, the father who one second is so strong and the next you find him so weak, and then you have an aunt or a cousin, a friend , or even an enemy who can’t help but having their boobs out all the time?! You know. It really made me laugh! Every tear I release a toxin LOL. It was beautiful and smart. I look forward to reading so much more from Laura and highly recommend her books to anyone who wants to read about hard lessons, good intentions, and finding your happiness !
Poppy and her husband are trying for a baby...a little unsuccessfully and despite the saddening circumstances they face, the laughter at the hands of Poppy and her accident prone ways will have you in kinks. I chuckled frequently at her from scenes to do with apple juice, STD testing, tampons and 'paracetamol' use ;)
Her relationship with her mother and father is also something to keep you throughly amused. with her father receiving news to give him a new outlook on life there is a recurrent theme throughout the story of him trying new adventurous aspects of life - much to Poppy's dismay!
Poppy's best friend, Jazz also faces her own set of storylines after a bit inheritance and despite saying it won't change her, she pushes away some of those closest to her. In the story of her recognising this and trying to help her friends is sweet and endearing - she and Poppy have one of the strongest and most hilarious relationships and their bond is evident throughout.
I think with the story having so many storylines it felt a little busy but it didn't detract from the humour and toeing relationship this group of friends have and how they all pull together when needed. A truly uplifting and hilarious read that had me in tears of laughter frequently!
A pleasure to read!
