Saw James Garner give a copy of this to Johnny Carson who read a few passages. (This was on a 35 year old rerun).
Had to have it. I may purchase several more to give to friends. We need more humor in our country and less hate.

This book alternates brief bios with people who only occasionally seem interesting today, with a few pages of curmudgeonly but (alas) truthful remarks connected with each letter of the alphabet.
No real interest in the bios, but I start each day with a random selection of the remarks and feel I'm better armored for the reality of the day.

I've had this book for probably 20 years. My father periodically sends me emails that have collections of snarky humorous comments in them, most of which I've already seen, so I sent him this book. It's loaded with fave like Ambrose Bierce, Evelyn Waugh, Samuel Clemens, Dorothy Parker, WC Fields, Churchill and the other clever barbed wits of the day. The book has been around for a while, so it's not going to have any classics from the past 20 years or so, but regardless it's a great read. Not t be indelicate or anything, but this is one of those books that's perfect reading for the bathroom, as it can literally be digested one sentence at a time. The down side is that occasionally a guest will use your bathroom and not come out for 20 minutes.

What an awesome collection of the snarkiest bites from the sharpest tongues the world over. Twain, W.C. Fields, Churchill, Bierce, Mencken, and all the funniest, sharpest wits around. The overview of this book is: (at least to me) that these are people who have loved the world, have seen what it is, and are calling it out on it's faults for what it isn't. And the choices are damned funny. I gave my old copy to my son when he went to graduate school, and bought another one in hardcover, just to have around. It's that good a compendium. Certainly, if you like the funniest, snarkiest bits of Mark Twain or Oscar Wilde, you will LOVE this. You might also check out Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary.

you will find yourself trying to remember every one of these witty wise and ascerbic aphorisms!
Thus armed you will be prepared to thrust a verbal dagger into the hearts of the lame brained and dullards who leave us at the mercy of their sheer and preposterous inanity and ignorance stumbling for that perfect retort -that response that sums up everything you know to be true but just can't quite summon up the perfect response - WELL not anymore! - There's a quip and a retort in this tome that will make you a truly Enlightened Curmudgeon! -AND a dangerous target for fools.
