Not only that, it is a great tool for camping. I leave it in my tent and keep all of my kids devices charged and going all night. They sit in the tent and play their devices, which I am sitting around the camp fire enjoying to outdoors. I would like to look into getting solar panels for it, I think that would make it even better. With that said, I have used over night before and have never run it down to 0%, it lasts a long time when fully charged. They only thing I will say is I am not sure I would use it for hiking due to the weight. It is nice and small, but is rather heavy so carrying it around in a back back would be quite a workout.
We had it in the middle of our SUV on a trip to Florida and I never had to worry about my kids electronic devices going dead. Really versatile item, I love it.
Living in the northern south we get all of the weather types. Whether it be snow, rain, sleet or even tornados we will see it. However the worst thing of all that we get is ice storms. Back in 1994 we had an ice storm that came through and knocked the power out of the entire city for over a week. This is why my wife complains all the time about the weather. With this battery backup it give my wife piece of mind and it lets me keep my insanity.
First I would like to say how nice it was to receive this battery backup with a full 100% charge out of the box. Little things like this show that the company cares more than other companies. The build quality of the unit is extremely nice and love that the case is not metal as it cuts down on weight and is much safer if there was a short in the product. No one likes to get shocked! All of the plugs and sockets on the unit are built top notch and have NO play in them. I plugged in many devices to try to get the plug to come loose and it just would not.
Mostly I will be using this device as a UPS while the weather is not a problem and will have it hooked up to modem and router to keep wireless internet alive if power goes out. I love the fact that this is a pure sine wave unit. For those people that do not understand what this means to put it very simply it means the power the unit supplies is very clean and does not have a lot of noise in it. This is important if you plan on hooking computers, phones, or techy stuff to it as it keeps the device safe.
If the power does go out for an extended period of time the unit has the ability to be charged with a solar panel. I got an optional MC4 plug to hook my solar panels up to the unit to test it out and it worked like a charm. This is going to make it so I can now charge cell phones with solar in my house as the unit also includes 4 USB charging ports on it (2 are 1 amp and 2 are 2.1 amp). The unit also includes 4 12v DC ports that can be used for many other devices like what you would use in a car.
As for what you can hook up to the AC (wall plugs) here are somethings I have tested to work with no problems: electric heater, router, cable modem, computer with monitor, fan, and laptop.
Finally a word of caution. Do not, I repeat, do not point the light at your wife’s face when turning it on. If you do this you will not have a very good night. The led light is extremely bright! This is a good thing when used for what you would use it for but not good to accidently shine at someone.
So in short if you need a backup battery setup that will not break the bank this is a great unit that I would highly recommend to anyone.
This item arrived today. According to the LED readout, it's 100% charged, which is a pleasant surprise. I hope that's correct. The instructions in the tiny manual states, "For the first time using, please use out completely the power first then full re-charge it for the battery." It's not the first user manual I've read that I suspect was first written in another language, then translated by someone for whom English is not his native tongue. Still, it's clear enough.
If you search long and hard on Amazon you'll find at least a half dozen other nearly identical models made by different "manufacturers." Just search for "288 Wh" or "288 watt hours" and you'll find a bunch. The only variation seems to be that some have three "NEMA 5-15" connectors (normal USA three-prong wall outlet/receptacle) and others have two universal connectors that would let you plug in any USA, UK, Euro, etc., AC device. Prices vary. When I bought this one, it was the cheapest of the ones which promised "pure sine wave" AC power. Since I suspect that they are all really made in a single Chinese factory (the user manual says made in China), I also suspect that if any provide "pure sine wave" power, then all do. However, there are some seemingly identical models (but with different brand names) that were cheaper on Amazon which didn't claim (or mention one way or another) to provide pure sine wave power.
If you have to ask what is "pure sine wave" power, you probably don't care. However, if you plan to power very delicate electronics with this, you might. The AC power provided by your local electric power company (in your wall outlets) has a pure sine wave. When you take a DC power source (which all batteries are) and you run it through an "inverter" to convert it in to AC it may also have a pure sine wave or it might be a "modified sine wave." PhDs have written dissertations on this, but suffice to say that some finicky electronics devices balk at being powered by "modified sine wave" AC power. In other words, if you don't have pure sine wave AC power your device *might* not run. I chose to buy this model which promises pure sine wave power rather than risk that the medical equipment that I need to power with it would run reliably on a cheaper unit that *might* have only "modified sine wave" AC power.
Anyway... I will update my review after using it this weekend on a two day campout. If it holds up, I'll add a star. If after several campouts it holds up, I'll add another star.
The percentage display is very unreliable.
I received this on a Wednesday. As stated in original review, the readout showed 100% on delivery (possible, but unlikely). I used it overnight (7.5 hours) with a 110vAC device that (according to the manufacturer) draws 30 watts. The next morning it showed it still had 92% capacity. Either the device manfacturer's 30 watt rating is massively wrong, it the readout at 92% couldn't possibly be correct (way too high). According to the example given in the description of the 7lb 500W 288WH Backup Portable Generator Solar Power Source Power Inverter UPS 26000mah Li-on Battery Power Supply Powerhouse Charged by Solar/AC Outlet/Cars with 3 AC & 4 DC 12V & 4 USB Ports 288Wh (Watt hours) divided by 60 watts = 4.8 hours. Thus 288Wh / 30 watts = 9.6 hours. If I used a 30 watt device for 7.5 hours, it should have used ~78% of the capacity, so the display should have read something like 22% (not 92%). Again, the device I used overnight might have drawn a fraction of what it is rated for, but that's unlikely. I'll have to purchase a "Watt Minder" or similar device (sort of a personal electric meter for just one device) and see, but for the display to be right, my device would have had to have drawn only about 3-4 watts. It just seems nigh impossible that a manufacturer would overstate the electrical load by a factor of ten.
After the first night of use as described above, I plugged an ordinary 110vDC table fan into it and let it run until the readout was close to 0% and an alarm started sounding. I then unplugged the fan, turned off the battery backup unit and plugged it into wall power to re-charge. After about 5 hours it registered 100% and the AC charge light was solid green.
On Friday and Saturday night I used it for about 8 hours each night with the same supposedly 110vAC 30 watt device. I did not recharge after the first night. After the second night, the percentage meter read 62% capacity remaining. If my device really drawing 30 watts, at the portable battery truly has 288Wh capacity (not more), then this should be impossible. 288Wh / 30 Watts = 9.6 hours. For me to use it 16 hours and have it not die seems mathematically impossible.
I'll order a P3 P4400 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor and the extensively edit this review in accordance with the numbers.
