First, let's say this, I have one of those old iPod docking stations, and it's a great sound - if not a little too much bass (it's the highly rated Altec Lansing inMotion IM7 from many years ago). It's great for when you're in the shower with the exhaust fan going, but it's huge... like takes up 1/4 of my counter top. It put's a booming sound, but I hardly ever need to turn the volume up very high.
Enter the Anker cube bluetooth speaker. It's tiny, perhaps 1/10th the size of the Altec Lansing. It connects via bluetooth which is handy. The range is very good for bluetooth. I have a Pebble watch and that loses connection before the speaker. I don't live in a large warehouse, so the line of sight thing never applies, but this speaker will go through a floor and a couple rooms. At 1/10th the size, it definitely puts out more than its 1/10th share of sound. At its loudest, it's plenty to hear in the shower. At night when I'm lazing around I usually only listen to it at 30% volume or so. It's sound is more directional than the Altec Lansing, but that too is expected when you have a smaller (in size and power) speaker. Sometimes I'll turn it on it's side so the speaker points a certain direction.
I like that you can control the overall volume using your phone/device. I think putting all the control on the speaker has little utility. I am also a finicky listener, and I am always using my device to change the song, so I might as well use it to change my volume too. The finish of it, is nice to touch, but it's that kind of thing that keeps oily finger prints, but I don't exactly stare at the speaker - most speakers are better heard than seen. Battery life is outstanding. In the few hours of play I've had, it still shows a 90% battery on the corner of my iPhone screen. And isn't that another cool thing? The bluetooth on the top right shows connected and a separate battery for the bluetooth device.
The only con I can think of is handling multiple connections. Generally I leave my phone connected, but sometimes I'll use my iPad to watch videos. I want to use the speaker to combat the poor iPad speaker placement, and my poor handling of putting my hands over the speakers, but I have to disconnect my phone, then reconnect my iPad. I wish I could demand the bluetooth connection without having to go into the bluetooth settings to disconnect my phone first. Last, I kind of wish they made a white cube speaker. It'll look better in my bathroom ;)
At first I like the voice prompts but not until i brought it to work. The voice prompts are too loud and these is no way to lower it or turn it off. I have to take a star off for that. If not for the voice prompt this would have been a perfect little speaker.
Stopped working after just over 5 months. Wont turn on or charge. Seems to be completely dead.
Also interesting is the fact that the product description says and I quote..
"This little stereo packs the state-of-the-art Bluetooth 4.0 standard."
Yet in reply to one of the customer reviews they tell the person this....
Thank you for taking time to leave the review and letting us know the problem. Sorry for the inconvenience. I would think the one you have is faulty and we will be glad replacing it for you. It's also not BT Ver 4.0. It's actually Ver 2.1. Please contact us via email@example.com for further assistance on this. We will try our best to help.
