This little device has been responsible for more parties in more countries that I care to admit. I was particularly attracted to this Bluetooth speaker because it's durable in every sense of the word. Any time you have a portable device, you need to take into consideration all the things that come with portability such as water, impacts, etc. I've had this speaker since October 2014, and it still functions like it's brand new. Within the two years I've had this, it has withstood heavy impacts, large falls, complete submersion in sand, both fresh, salt water, and spills from colorful liquids in hotels. I have never had a problem with its function or issues connecting. You can literally pour sand, water, and dirt directly into the speaker and pour it out only to find that it works just as well as before.
The sound quality is excellent. Its bass comes from the bottom of the speaker so it sounds better when its on a surface that can reflect the sound. It's loud enough for the beach and on a kayak in open waters (please refer to photos) and the perfect size to take as a carry-on or to throw in your bag to have an amazing system literally wherever you go.
The battery itself lasts a very long time. With minimal use, I charge it once a month at its worst. On 5-6 days long trips, I don't charge it at all because that's how long the battery lasts. It's rated for 12 hours. Not to mention, the battery can charge your phone in case your phone dies. However, with my iphone 6, I was not able to get nearly a full charge from the battery. It's simply not big enough.
Overall, this is an amazing speaker for ALL of your travel purposes, whether on an expedition to mountain-tops (yes, I've taken this on expeditions) or a simple weekend getaway. The sound quality is phenomenal, the battery is great, it's submersible, and it can withstand insane impacts (check out the video Braven has dropping this off a building and running it over with a hummer... it really is that durable). You won't be disappointed in any way. It's everything you want in a portable speaker. It simply won't let you down... even after two years of hard use!
I've had this speaker for about 2 months now, works flawlessly every time. Connection is fast & pairs easy. Battery life is as claimed. I get a good 10 to 12 hours out of a single charge. Sound is top notch, easily loud enough to hear in a noisy environment. Highs & mid's are accurate & give the speaker a wide sound stage. Plenty of bass which is solid & punchy to fill in the overall sound. Perfect for what I use it for. I've tried several bluetooth speakers for work & this one by far out shines the speakers I have tried. It's overall functionality, easy of use & durability have made this my "go to" speaker...it's also loud enough to use in a car on the freeway with the windows down.
Does this unit put out audiophile quality sound? No. It sounds like music from a small, cheap speaker. Because that's what it is. We live in a world where physics control sound, you simply aren't going to host a dance party with this thing. What they HAVE done with this is amazing. The sound is balanced, I can hear all the instruments rather than imagining where the bass guitar should be, the cymbals sound good, the vocals are clear. And it's plenty loud enough.
So what's small and cheap sounding about it? Easy, you can hear the resonation of the case. If you hold it while it's playing, the vibrations clearly come through your hand, and that colors the sound a fair amount. Under the circumstances, I can't say it bothers me much though. If you buy a nice pair of studio monitors, or a nice pair of high end home speakers, one of the big things you're paying for is the bracing in the cabinets that keep them from vibrating and resonating with the music, and coloring the sound - you want to hear the pure sound from the speakers, not the enclosures. But this is expensive, and heavy. The BRV-1 is neither of these things. In fact, it's so light, when I first picked it up I questioned if there was enough battery in the unit to last as long as they claimed. But rest assured there is.
As far as volume is concerned, I haven't bothered to pull out my decibel meter and measure it, and here's why: It's loud enough. When I'm in the woods, sometimes it's a park in the middle of town, and sometimes it's not. But I don't want to drown out everything around me, I just want to hear my music. So what music am I listening to that sounds good on this? Pretty much everything. Metal, country, blues, stomp, classic rock - anything that has enough energy to make me want to keep going and tap my foot. And the very bottom line on this unit - it reproduces the music faithfully enough to make you want to tap your foot.
Now, as I was auditioning speakers, there were a few that stood out as sounding better than this. They were all much heavier than I wanted to carry. Several were louder, but didn't sound as balanced. And some sounded pretty good, and were light enough to carry, but didn't have enough battery to stay with me all day. So at the end of the day, I chose this speaker, and I have no regrets.
