A couple things built for me while I was reading the series that eventually caused me to put the series down.
First was that there was not enough feeling and convincing put into the alien races to make them feel like alien races. I felt that aside from having non-human names I could easily replace all of them as humans and have the story proceed without any change in tone.
Often times aliens would make completely bizarre references to Christianity that they should not have anyway of knowing. Such as "Go with God." or a number of 'walk on water' references. With humanity in this series being barely exposed to space, this just seems extremely out of character for any alien to have knowledge of, let alone say.
Overdoing references of traveling from galaxy to galaxy, which could have easily been substituted for planet to planet. The increased scope of being able to travel between galaxies, but still have crafty humans surprise the aliens time after time started to wear thin quickly.
I enjoyed seeing the three characters grow from slaves to superheros. I also like the ethics of the characters and their ability to protect themselves and their friends. I hope that the series continue and look forward to their next adventure.
