Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Coming up screaming from the depths of Florida - there being no scarier state in the union - Marilyn Manson cannily positioned themselves as a goth-industrial hybrid on their debut album, Portrait of an American Family. At this stage in their evolution, Marilyn Manson was clearly a band, not just the project of Brian Warner, aka Mr. Manson, who would later simply adopt his band's name as his own. Also, horror-show schlock was a bigger factor than it would be later on, when he wanted to be the Antichrist Superstar for the world at large. In other words, it's Manson at his silliest, singing about "My Monkey" and "Snake Eyes and Sissies." Nevertheless, beneath all the camp shock there are signs of Warner's unerring eye for genuine outrage and musical talent, particularly on the trio of "Cake and Sodomy," "Lunchbox," and "Dope Hat.
Amazon.com Review
Every parent's nightmare and every teenager's dream band, Marilyn Manson take no prisoners on their blistering and brutal Trent Reznor-produced debut. Aiming to shock and rock simultaneously, Portrait scores high marks in both arenas. Manson and his grand grimoire take Alice Cooper's tongue-in-cheek mix of glam and death rock to the nth degree with their vision of youth gone wild, personified on cuts like "Cake and Sodomy" and "Lunchbox," a schoolyard revenge fantasy gone horribly awry. One of the most original, hardest rocking albums recorded in the '90s, Portrait of an American Family is a hallmark of the industrial/metal genre, but not for those who are easily offended. --Gail Worley

This is a very special album! It is the first official CD by Marilyn Manson and is very "fun" to listen to. As said by many people, the tracks in POAAF act as if to set a blue print for the future works that would be put out. Cake and Sodomy especially does a fine job to predict the future ideas of MM. The prominent parts of this album would be the heavy use of references through sound and word. i.e: Wrapped in Plastic making references to Twin Peaks with a recording of a scene from the show. In fact, the references to outside things is heavy... be that as it may, it does not have a negative impact on the music, but rather a positive one. I don't believe ever again has there been so many different things in reference during the later music of this band!
The lyrics in this album also have some of the strongest imagery I have been able to see when hearing music, including Manson's later work. This is on my list of Marilyn Manson's best albums.
Favorite tracks: Organ Grinder, Dope Hat, Wrapped in Plastic, Sweet Tooth, Snake Eyes and Sissies, and Misery Machine.
Least favorite: My Monkey-- because the song sounded.. bad. Too much of that twisted voice gives me a head ache.
When listening to this music you can feel the release of ideas, and it seems amazing that it manages to stay cohesive while coming so close to flying off the tracks into insanity. The metaphors are endless if you have the imagination for them, and after hearing this album a few times over, your initial imagination might actually grow from it.
