I am a devotee of Philip Whalen, and I am overjoyed to report that Maged Zaher, whether he knows it or not, is a prime heir to Whalen's incomparable wordplay arising from the moment at hand. This is not to say Zaher sounds like Whalen, though to my ear Whalen and Zaher compose to a similar drummer. Zaher in Portrait Of The Poet As An Engineer is overtly romantic and sensual, whereas Whalen usually hides his romanticism in humorous blasphemy. I've ordered copies of Zaher's modern gem for my brother, an internet technician who will love Zaher's particular world view, and copies for poet friends who will delight, as I do, in Zaher's gorgeous blend of sensuality, irony, and hope; yes, hope, despite all the recent news to the contrary.
