Beginning his career with photos of Amish life in Lancaster County, PA, he continues with pictures of the elusive Hutterites (a small Amish-like sect in Montana), life in the West, the highest and lowest classes in the Deep South, the lakes of Minnesota, and American rodeo culture. The high points of the photographic journey, however, are photo essays of minor league baseball and blues culture in Chicago, New Orleans, and Mississippi. Included are great character studies along with sweeping landscape shots and eye-catching photographs of people in action. As I already said, the book is a work of art from start to finish. Allard's work never disappoints. Enough said. Far be it from me to make any of his excellent books look bad by giving fewer than five stars when my only problem has to do exclusively with the seller.

From the start, I had clearly been given the impression that the copy of the book I ordered was going to be hardcover, and it arrived softcover. It arrived in perfect condition, just not hardcover.

It was obviously a let-down to receive the softcover version when I had paid for (and obviously preferred) the more expensive and durable hardcover version, as this is a book I hope to have in my collection for the rest of my life.

If I didn't live outside the country, I would attempt some sort of an exchange. But it's not worth the time or the effort.

This seller just ought to be more careful in the future.

For those who come from the golden days of documentary photography and National Geographic, you won't be disappointed. He was the biggest influence for me to go down this path and specifically shoot color when I was a die hard black and white photographer.

Portraits of America is probably the best photography book in my collection. Many of the images in the book are raw, honest and bring out the character of his subjects. What I love about this book is that it is not just a pictorial but has Allard's narrative about his experiences, what he was thinking during these assignments and the people within the images. He shows sides to the various cultures of America that many people never see otherwise.

Buchseiten innen waren gut aber der Einband war beschädigt. Die Verpackung war absolut ungenügend. Nur dünne Plastikfolie als Schutz reicht nicht aus für den Versand. Da es innen ok war und ich mich gleich in die Fotos verliebte habe ich es für den Preis (als gebraucht gekauft) behalten.
Gerade bei einem so schönen Bildband erwartet man etwas mehr Sorgfalt bei der Verpackung. Verpackung ist generell das Hauptproblem beim Internet Versandhandel. Viele Sendungen sind einfach nicht sorgfältig und auf den Inhalt bezogen verpackt. Jetzt will ich mich aber nicht weiter ärgern, sondern mich an den wunderschönen Fotos von William A. Allard in diesem Bildband erfreuen.
