This is my first Cynthia Freeman book and I am so glad I read it. What a magnificent family saga. As a child of the fifties and
Born as an american in a territory of the US, this story so resonates with what I have seen, lived and experienced since I moved
To the mainland. The story of Joseph and Sara and their children is pretty much the story of every immigrant that came to this
Magnificent country looking for a better life and opportunities. What a journey they had, and how many memories this book
Brought forward from my own journey. Ms. Freeman got it right. I see a lot of her portraits in my own gallery. Thank you for writing
It. I look forward to reading many more of her books. I am now her fan.

About the Author
Cynthia Freeman (1915–1988) was the author of multiple bestselling novels, including Come Pour the Wine, No Time for Tears, and The Last Princess. Her novels sold more than twenty million copies worldwide. Born in New York City’s Lower East Side, she moved as a young child with her family to Northern California, where she grew up. She fell in love with and married her grandmother’s physician. After raising a family and becoming a successful interior decorator, a chronic illness forced her to adopt a more sedentary lifestyle. At the age of fifty-five, she began her literary career with the publication of A World Full of Strangers. Her love of San Francisco and her Jewish heritage drove her to write novels with the universal themes of survival, love, hate, self-discovery, joy, and pain, conveying the author’s steadfast belief in the ability of the human spirit to triumph over life’s sorrows.

I enjoyed this book from the beginning. I got caught up in the hardships, hard decisions, Jewish culture. I had no idea it would be such a long story, perhaps a series would have suited it better. About 2/3 into the book I thought, are all those Jewish stereotypes true? Sara's behavior became so irritating in that way. Toward the end I felt some of it forced and unrealistic but I had to follow it through. I'd become too attached. It's worth the read, but be prepared for the long of it.

This book was awful. There wasn't a single likeable character. The same story was told over and over and over again. Go on a date, immediately fall in love and agree to marriage, marriage fails. I only kept reading in hopes of redemption, there was none. This family is awful, cruel, spineless, pathetic, sad. I do not recommend.

I found this book to be a tedious read about five generations of a very dysfunctional Jewish family. Other than "Doris" I don't think there was one redeeming character in the book. Not only were they dysfunctional, they were totally unlikeable and mean spirited. The opening chapters were fairly good and got me hooked on learning more about this family. However, I thought the final chapter would never come. As a previous reviewer wrote, it was repetitious...….couple meets, falls in love instantly, marries quickly, has problems with childbirth, divorces......It was so repetitious that you really only need to read a couple of chapters to know what the story is about. I have read other Cynthia Freeman novels and was very excited to read this family saga. Unfortunately, I was sadly disappointed. Seven hundred pages....about six hundred pages too long and a total waste of time.

I have a long novels. This one was very good and kept my interest right up until the very end. The characters and the story were believable. The only thing that was a little “fairytale like” was how quickly the characters fell in love and then married. For instance, almost every single character in the book met someone, went on a date and was engaged a day later. This would have been fine if it had only happened to one character, but almost all of them did it. After a while you begin to look for a pattern and it was always there. That’s the only thing that made this book unrealistic to me. Still worth reading and a very enjoyable read!

This story, which had a lot of potential, is tedious, flat, unengaging and unnecessarily long. I slogged through in the hopes that it would get better. It didn't. The characters were unsympathetic, the storyline was too linear, and the writer's voice was unimaginative and monotone. This might be OK for an author's first attempt, but for a fourth novel? It's a disappointment. There were also some typos that I found distracting in the Kindle version.

Quite an investment of time at almost 700 pages, but it covers 5 generations of a Jewish-American family, with all the joys, tragedies and turmoil that besets all families. It's a tragedy that no-one writes books like this anymore. We must literally delve into the past to find them, but the great ones like this are well worth the effort.

I read the paperback book version of this novel years ago and loved it; so when I saw it was available on digital, I purchased it to read again....and was not disappointed! It was just as good as the first time around; could not put it down until I finished it again. I also lent it to a friend, and recommended it to another friend, who bought it. They both loved it too!

No life or soul

I didn't like or relate to any of the cardboard cut-out characters and bailed early. It read like someone fictionalising a family history for a school project: no life at all in it. Jewish history is very relevant to me but I simply didn't care what happened to the characters.

Great Expectations

I truly enjoyed this novel for all of its realistic outcomes. The novel truly teaches us that it isn't sufficient to take what life has to offer but to offer oneself opportunities and make things happen. Sad, realistic and funny at times, this book us highly recommended.

A Family's Story
Reviewed in Canada on August 13, 2017Verified Purchase
This book is a very fast read. I thought the number of pages would be crazy, but it was a Jewish Family saga filled with all the ups and downs of family life. The only thing I felt was weird was how fast these people fell in love and got married, it caught me off guard every time. I did enjoy the story.
