About the Author
Dr. Paul Pimsleur devoted his life to language teaching and testing and was one of the world’s leading experts in applied linguistics. After years of experience and research, Dr. Pimsleur developed The Pimsleur Method based on two key principles: the Principle of Anticipation and a scientific principle of memory training that he called “Graduated Interval Recall.” This Method has been applied to the many levels and languages of the Pimsleur Programs.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has ever wanted to learn a new language. I took spanish in high school and it was much more difficult than this. Its like learning the way we all learned at first, by hearing and speaking the words/phrases. No verb conjugations or reading or writing (though i guess there is a booklet you can get). I really enjoy it and feel very proud of myself with each lesson that I learn. It says to move on to the next lesson when you have at least answered 80% right, but I usually continue with it longer until I feel I've mastered it.
Each lesson builds on the previous one, so its a review plus it introduces new words and phrases. It also has 2 natives of the language speaking so you're actually learning the true pronunciations of words. How they actually say things if born in Portugal etc. For ex, there vowel sounds are different than ours even though they use similar letters, etc. THey are much more nasal also.
Anyway, I have really enjoyed the Pimsleur Approach to learning a language. I have never tried Rosetta Stone so i dont have anything to compare it to, except High School/College Spanish. Pimsleur makes it very easy to learn a language. When I start a new lesson, I think "Oh Crap, this is hard. How am I ever going to learn this?!", but eventually, after repetition I just catch on. I just remember! Very satisfied customer! I will probably cont on with port. II & III once i have mastered these 30 lessons (16 CD's).
I hope this review helps. You really have nothing to lose in trying the Pimsleur Language Learning Approach. I love it!! Good Luck!!
I've had the Portuguese I about two months now and am almost finished with the first set. It works as advertised; I just pop the CDs in my car and listen to them on the way to work. I have a desk job and couldn't stand the idea of sitting in front of a computer to do rosetta stone or some other online product. The Pimsleur CDs are pretty accurate (according to the Brazilian Namorada). The CDs get progressively more difficult so I never end up getting bored using them.
While I'm nowhere near fluent, I was able to talk a little with my girlfriend's mother. Her broken English and my broken Portuguese were enough that we could chat some to ourselves. Also, I'm able to catch the gist of the conversations between the girlfriend and mother when they are video chatting. I've ordered the second set of CDs and am looking forward to learning more. Next stop is Sao Paulo in July. I'll update the posts to say how it went.
