Editorial Reviews

Delicate Steve's debut album Wondervisions was critically hailed across the board--from a lead review in The New York Times, to NPR, to blogs like Stereogum and The Fader. The record made a minor ripple… but those who heard it fell in love with it. It made NPR's year end list, and made Delicate Steve a favorite among a cadre of bands including Yeasayer, Ra Ra Riot, Akron Family, and Dirty Projectors-- many of whom either brought the band on the road with them, or went out of their way to turn folks on to the burgeoning instrumental unit. Positive Force explodes the promise of Wondervisions. A response to taking a bedroom record out into the world and performing in front of large crowds, Positive Force is a much bigger record sonically than the debut. What is becoming a signature command of melody--that thing that allows you to sing these wordless songs out loud, and rejoice while doing it--is front and center here. Positive Force is a world unto itself. Written, recorded, and mixed by Delicate Steve's namesake Steve Marion, it's a record that wraps itself around you and brings it to its own place. Listen to it now.

Delicate Steve is Steve Marion. He's a guitarist that makes instrumental guitar music unlike anyone else. This is the kind of guitar music other hot shot guitarists should aspire to. Unlike 99% of today's current guitar dudes, Steve Marion makes truly inspiring music. It's not how fast or dexterous a guitarist is that is truly impressive. It's if he can move you. Steve Marion moves you.

`Ramona Reborn' opens Positive Force beautifully. The first impression you get is that George Harrison has returned to us and is playing through this veritable `kid'. With Harrison's knack for fluid slide playing, Marion effortlessly runs up and down his Telecaster's neck and makes his guitar announce an opening hymn of sorts. Pure joy put to tape. `Wally Wilder' starts out with a mournful guitar lick played through an Electro Harmonix Pog and quickly turns into something more uplifting, followed along with simple percussion and accompanied by Marion's own dubbed over guitar lines. There's almost a reggae vibe to the song. `Two Lovers' is a delicately picked acoustic piece which moves into Hendrix territory with single coil buzz. A theramin-sounding haunted melody is played as female backing vocals come in with the gently played percussion. This is world music for folks that don't think they like world music. `Big Time Receiver' has some crazy noodling in the background with some McCartney-esque piano and vocal harmonies. Think Wings collaborating with Ratatat. It's truly an awe-inspiring track. I've heard moments of sunshine like this on Mogwai records as well. Delicate Steve hits all the high points of great instrumental music. `Positive Force' the title track and centerpiece gets back to the George Harrison territory, via Gone Troppo.

Here's to hoping for more music from this talented artist. Narrative instrumental music, a great listen.

Very rocking. Very deep rocking. Tones that feel both triumphant and sad at the same time. Delicate Steve is indeed a badass. Get for yourself. Gift it to your friends. Play it for the old folks.

I've never been into instrumentals, but I haven't been able to stop listening to this for the last two months.

Bought this due to a strong review in American Songwriter magazine. In my 50 plus years of purchasing music, this has to stand out as the worst buy ever. I loaned this cd to 4 of my best friends and they all hated it as well. Sounds like Alvin and the chipmunks on meth. Sorry, just sayin.
