Review

“Bravo-or brava-to coming-out positively pioneer Betty Berzon, for taking the time to update her classic 1979 handbook for the newly queer . . . hers ought to be among the first any questioning, closeted queer turns to, or is offered, whenever that closet door starts to open. It'¬?s good the book is back: even into its third decade, it remains the most useful general guide for anyone seeking to out themselves, as well as for their friends and family and for counselors and other professionals.”— PlanetOut and the LAMDA Book Report“[A] well-loved and superior resource for lesbian/gay life.”-Library Journal“The original edition of this book brought gay info to a generation. . . . essential.” —The Advocate “POSITIVELY GAY was the first gay book I ever read. It scared me. It challenged me. It excited me. And it eventually made me feel good about myself.” -Michelangelo Signorile, author of Queer in America, Outing Yourself, and Life Outside

The title of the book says it all. Notice how "controversy" or "queer" are not in the title; it's neither just a debate or some postmodern radicalism. This book is best for gay men and lesbians just coming out. It's all about being positive about supporting gay rights and being a part of the community and coming out to straights. I particularly liked this book for its section on lesbians and gay men of color. This was a nice, easily read anthology.

I used to be ashamed of being gay, in many ways, I still am. But this book helped me embrace my inner 'mo. The other day, I was brave enough to discuss a homoerotic fantasy in public! Namely the one [...] In other words...I'm Positively Gay!

Although the title has "new" in it, this book is slightly outdated. It is good for basics and limited when it comes to more current queer theory and practice.
