Manolito De La Cruz knew he was dangerously close to turning into a vampire. The last thing he expected after being called back to his Carpathian homeland by Prince Mikhail was to catch the scent of his destined lifemate in MaryAnn Delaney. MaryAnn is human, but she knows all too well the overwhelmingly aggressive instincts of Carpathian males. And they’re not exactly the kind of men she’d prefer to be bound to for life.
A dedicated counselor for battered women, MaryAnn has a fulfilling life with no room for someone like Manolito, born and bred in the Carpathian mountains, a law unto himself. But when MaryAnn agrees to go to South America to offer guidance to a brutalized young woman, she has no idea of the trap that awaits her in the sweltering thick of the jungle. She has been lured there by Manolito himself, who has seductive plans for the unaware, irresistibly human female...

- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2007Manolito De La Cruz is Carpathian. He has awakened in the rain forest surrounded by vampires and apparitions. He is in grave danger and senses his lifemate is near, but he doesn't know who she is.
MaryAnn Delaney has come to the Del La Cruz home on the outskirts of the rain forest to counsel her friend Juliette's sister Jasmine. Jasmine is the victim of a sexual attack and MaryAnn is a counselor for battered women. She is finding it difficult to help anyone though because she herself is falling apart. She witnessed Manolito's death and is grieving and sinking into a depression that confuses her as much as it distresses her. She barely knew Manolito. Juliette and her lifemate Riordan, Manolito's brother, sense that MaryAnn is connected to Manolito in some way so they take her into the jungle to try and find him.
Manolito is trapped in the spirit world. He doesn't know who has trapped him or why and the danger is rapidly growing. While he and MaryAnn discover unfathomable things about her, it becomes evident that Manolito's past has come back to haunt him.
Dark Possession is a fascinating story. Its amazing imagery, thrilling battle scenes and intense sensuality are unparalleled. Manolito is an alpha male in every sense of the word and MaryAnn is stylish, strong, and independent; their joining is spectacular. Dark Possession's magnificence lies in its incredible storyline and sensational characterization. I was captivated and consumed from first page to last!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2023Dark Possession, book 18 of the series Dark, by Christine Feehan & it's time to read the series from the beginning again! This will be my 2nd time through the most recent book. @authorcfeehan is one of my favorite authors.
This book picks up right after Dark Celebration with MaryAnn & Manolito’s story. The Carpathians that MaryAnn has met tell her she is physic but she doesn't think she is. As Manolito & MaryAnn get closer, he realizes that she is not a physic but a werewolf & as he is converting her, she is converting him. MaryAnn did not know this. They come together & become lifemates.
This was a different Carpathian storyline from Christine & it was fabulous!

Just like Dark Secret, this is a book that I thought was worse than it actually is. I kept thinking it was full of clothing descriptions but there were only two or three tops. Still though, I guess I can’t connect to MaryAnn because I’m not a girlie girl and I’m not all that concerned with fashion.
The characters aside for now, the plot was actually quite interesting, being halfway stuck in the spirit world, the complete background of the plan along with the De La Cruz and Malinov brothers. The outcome of that background sets up for an interesting reaction when readers get to Dark Slayer; for multiple reasons.
Not only was that mystery enough to keep me reading, the werewolf bit was an added bonus. Usually, something like that would be a little overwhelming, too much happening at once but, I think it added to the story.
And now, a few notes from my little journal:
I got to chapter 4 and my feelings for MaryAnn started going downhill a bit. You know you’re going to the rainforest but you don’t pack the right clothes? You pack your absolute favorite yet inappropriate for that area boots because they’re rainforest-y and you’re surprised when you mess them up?
A little later on, he basically told her that he loved her, without saying “I love you” and she’s still trying to tell herself that he doesn’t love her, it’s still just completely physical and all he wants to do is own her.
Then, he knows she has no idea what is going on with her wolf, she doesn’t even know she has a wolf and yet he instantly gets angry at her for what’s happening to him. I get the vampires telling Manolito that MaryAnn is leading him into a trap but that’s not what he accuses her of, and I doubt they were at fault when he accused her of infecting him. Even when he accepted the wolf, he still thought of it as an infection. He tells her that being Carpathian is who and what he is. MaryAnn doesn’t feel that way about being human? He never really apologized for that either. I hate double standards.
I don’t know if this is just my aversion to feet but I didn’t really like the ending, and that reminds me of something I didn’t write down. Manolito is a big, bad De La Cruz Carpathian and yet he knows instantly how to paint nails?
The characters, eh, the plot was very good, the mystery even better, the ending was eh as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2023MaryAnn is self assured and a strong woman who doesn’t need a man, but my how she wants one. I love how the author kept her girliness and charm throughout her ordeals. She may not appreciate the bugs, the dirt, or the heat, but she doesn’t let it stop her. And Manolito is as strong as the rest of the family with that edge of darkness that draws me in. He is alpha and overbearing, but he doesn’t lose sight that sometimes people are redeemable. I enjoyed watching these two clash and come together. Their story kept me on my toes and reluctant to put the book down. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2024I liked that two different species where converted into the carpathian
bloodline, a female werewolf and a male jaquar.
The conversion was very difficult yet still it was done.

Once again Feehan completed the story of Maryann and Manolta which started in previous books. The only complaint I have is reading along, and the book suddenly ends abruptly. I felt I was left out of them going to the ranch.
DebsReviewed in the United Kingdom on November 3, 20105.0 out of 5 stars Great characters, Loved it.
One of my favourite Feehan books, smart, witty, funny and with a twist. Bout time too that the Carpathians met their match - but in a good way. Otherwise it can get somewhat repetitive. Hopefully will lead to an expansion in the series.
One of my favourites with Dark Fire and Dark Celebration. The humour definitely works in these and love the characters. Ms Feehan seems to get them really right and they work well together.

Rimer ThomasReviewed in France on March 30, 20094.0 out of 5 stars toujours la reine Feehan !
Alire !

SabrinaReviewed in Germany on September 17, 20074.0 out of 5 stars Ein bisschen zu viel auf einmal
