I has anterior hip replacement for both hips, in July and September.
I opted to sleep on the downstairs couch for a while, as I've always been able to nap on it on my back, which really is the best sleeping position if you've had THR. The problem is that since I came home, I was not able to get comfortable on my back for long periods. I wanted to try a wedge pillow for back sleeping.
This pillow has been invaluable for keeping my legs comfortably elevated. With an ice cushion on one side, my cat Albert on the other, and a blanket on top, I have been able to rest well.
I noticed no smell when the pillow expanded on being opened. My only complaint is that the cover pilled badly after a short while, so looked no better after being washed than before. They might want to use a different fabric.
The size is good for me. I am 5'5" and most of my height is in my legs.
